Nowadays, thin coal seam mining is an important issue for the coal industry in China. By properly choosing mining method and optimizing mining face length of thin coal seam, not only higher production but also lower cost of per ton coal production and higher efficiency can be achieved.The proper choice of mining method of thin coal seam mining is decided by geological conditions, equipment and management conditions. According to the characteristics of thin coal seam mining face, an Artificial Neural Networks Expert system (ANNES) of thin coal seam mining method selection is built. A self-adaptation algorithm, modified by BP ANN is adopted to train the network. This system can be used to predict the productivity and thin coal seam mining method.This article further researched the length optimization of the thin coal seam mechanized mining face. By using mathematical model, parameters that may influence the thin coal seam mechanized mining face length are analysed to reveal the rules between the changes of those parameters and the optimized thin coal seam mining face length.
