For the past several years, the Ontology has been paid more attentions on the information science day by day. The Geographic Ontology is regarded as an newly emerging research direction in geography information science. It has greatly importantance on the research of conceptual model in the geospatial information, spatial data sharing, geographical classification., which has promoted the GIS widely on the knowledge reuse, knowledge sharing, the intelligent, the popularity and the network.The coal mine surveying data is playing the important role on its informationized construction in China. The paper has firstly analyzed the present application of our coal mine surveying data, which has mostly troubled by the problems of the chart only, the different graphic element or the chart without storehouse. So it caused the scattered management of coal mine surveying data, its lower efficiency and the obstruction of data sharing.Dealing with the above problems, the paper has brought the Ontology into the informationized process of coal mine, and starts from its concept. There are four main research works which have been done around its concept, construction methods, formal representation and its application in network services. Details are as follows:Firstly, the paper has carried out the classification and encoding on the coal mine surveying data, according to its characteristic and related standards in the field. And it has developed the tools in the modeling of Geographic Ontology and the data integration method, for building the Ontology of coal mine geospatial area.Secondly, the paper has studied the methods of Ontology and spatial data integration, established the coal mine surveying spatial database with its basic data, which is essential to realizing the web service of coal mine surveying data.Thirdly, the Ontology has been applied to coal mine geospatial area, which has proposed the theory of constructing catalogue service system of coal mine surveying data, combining the technology of Ontology and geospatial catalogue. The paper has also determined the principle of building catalogue system, which has provided an efficient solution for the use and management of coal mine surveying metadata, which also is one aspect of coal mine geographic information web service.Finally, the paper has developed the prototype system of web service on coal mine surveying data, and has built the sharing advantage of web service on different levels, which is from the nation to the mine field, from group to mine and to mining area. It realizes the WMS services, WFS services and Tile services of OGC, and also the combination of the metadata catalogue service system. All of these have provided the referenced opinions for the data management, intergration & sharing and web service of entire coal mine geospatial area.
