Although it has been long time since the first light pipe was invented, light pipes have not been widely used because of the high price and low efficiency. However, a prism film light guide invented in 1980's makes a great revolution in the development of light pipes. It transports light by total internal reflection of the light, so that the efficiency is highly raised.However, when it is used, the prism film light guide made by 3M company must be rolled into a cylindrical pipe with a prism film made by microcopy technique, which makes a seam at the joint of the prism films and the leak of light. Furthermore, the complicated producing technique increases the cost of prism film light guides and prevent it from being widely used.In this paper, a seamless PMMA prism light guide made by extrusion forming technique is introduced and the light-transporting principle of the guide is analyzed, then the efficiency is computed.Some factors that have effect on the efficiency of the seamless prism light guide are studied by theoretical analysis and experiments. According to the analysis, a specific method is used and the efficiency is increased. A computing and designing chart of the guide is also provided in this paper, which is useful in the practical application of the guide.Based on the theoretical analysis and experiments, the successful application of the seamless prism light guide lighting system in the lighting of special rooms is introduced in this paper. We also provide the solution of sealing and hanging problems when the guide is used in the lighting of special rooms.To explore a new application field of the guide, a model experiment of the application of the guide in gymnasium lighting is introduced in this paper. Experimental data show that it is feasible to use the seamless prism light guide in gymnasium lighting.
