The problem of ice induced vibration is common for ocean engineering of cold region countries. All these countries have devoted a lot in the research in this problem, but the research results are still far to be applied in practical engineering. The physical and mechanical characteristics of ice have great complexity, and the understanding in these complex characteristics of the ice force mechanics community is not mature. There are many types of structures in actual engineering, and ice will be failed in different modes before different structures, and the ice failure mechanics research is not mature either. This is the main reason of the research of dynamic ice force is such slowness.Model test is an important method in ice force mechanics research. But the development of dynamic ice force model test is not mature. By summarizing and estimating the dynamic ice force model tests that have been finished in the world, a set of test equipment and scheme were designed in this paper. The tests were designed to research in the problem of ice induced vibration of compliant conical structure and compliant vertical column, and some breakthrough progresses were obtained. The main research results were listed below. An important phenomenon was discovered in the complaint conical model tests. The front of ice sheet was failed by two-time fracture before the compliant cone. The process of two-time fracture could be divided into two modes, and the ice force will be acted in which mode depend on the general control of the ice and structural conditions. Two dynamic ice force functions were separately set up for the two modes of two-time fracture process in this paper. The numerical simulation results had a good fit with the measured results, indicating the dynamic ice force functions given in this paper can fully reflect the real situation of the dynamic ice load.An important conclusion that the control mechanism in the ice induced steady vibration of compliant vertical column is the interaction of ice and structure was obtained in model tests. Intermittent ductile-brittle crushing is the most important characteristic in the process of interaction. Based on this important discovery, a new concept — interaction coefficient — was set up in this paper. This parameter directly reflects the interaction level of ice and structure, and creates an important breakthrough direction in the research of ice induced vibration of compliant vertical column.
