The study of Transportation Corridor (TC) has widely gained people's attentions all over the world in many fields, such as Traffic & Transportation Planning, Transportation Economy, Transport Geography and Regional Economy. According to the region scale, TC can be divided into three scales: urban scale, regional scale and national or international scale. In the thesis Regional Passenger Transportation Corridor (RPTC) is studied in Urban Agglomerations (UA) characterized by high urbanization level and intensive passenger flow. The study on RPTC will be of great benefit to the construction of rational, rapid, efficient and ecological regional passenger transport system that will promote the sustainable development of UA. On the other hand, it will be of benefit to enhancing of theory study of TC. So it is of theoretical and practical significance to study on RPTC in the thesis.Firstly based on the methods and ideas of different subjects and fields, the concept of TC is defined and the significance and technical characteristics are analyzed. TC System regarded as a social-technical system is described from a new angle of view. The DS (Diamond Structure) model is proposed to explain the forming mechanism of TC. Applying self-organization theory, the forming and evolutionary processes of TC system regarded as an organic object are, emphatically elaborated. On the microcosmic scale, the TCLC (Transportation Corridor Life Cycle) model was raised to describe the ontogenetic trajectory of TC. And on the macroscopical scale, the main phases of self-organization evolution was analyzed. Then the general theoretical description about forming and evolutionary processes of TC is developed. It provides the theoretical bases for the following study of RPTC.According to the characteristics of urbanization and the challenge that the regional passenger transport faced in China, the RPTC in UA is analyzed and studied deeply by means of theoretical and practical approaches. Based on the goal of coordinating the relationship among the different transport mode in RPTC and the relationship between RPTC and regional economy, regional environment, different methods are used in the study of thesis. The hierarchical analysis of RPC system is carried out, and the elements of the system are described. Then the concept of entropy is introduced to describe the transport structure of RPTC. The passenger volume structure entropy and passenger volume structure evolutive entropy are defined to elaborate the state and evolutionary process of RPTC transport structure. On the basis of the analysis of the UA situation in China, the characteristics and trend of the passenger flow of UA in China are discussed. The passenger flow in RPTC, internal element of it, is analyzed emphatically. According to the phenomenon of regional urbanization, the basic idea and technical route of passenger volume forecasting are proposed. Based on the project of 'Passenger Volume Forecasting of Guangzhou-Zhuhai (including Zhongshan-Jiangmen) Intercity Rapid Mass Transit in Zhujiang Delta', the passenger volume of GuangZhu Corridor is forecasted as a case by using four-step forecasting method. The development mechanism of RPTC is studied in two main approaches. The First approach is concerned about the internal development mechanism, from the analysis of the competition and coordination of different transport modes in RPTC, and applying the theory of the Economy of Scale and Economy of Scope. The second approach is concerned about the external development mechanism. Firstly the Corridor Effects of TC is analyzed. Then it is concluded that Regional Transportation Corridor (RTC) plays roles of Infrastructure Axis, Economic Development Axis and Urbanization Axis in UA. The relationship and interaction between RTC and UA are elaborated. Based on hypercycle theory, the external development mechanism of RTC in the urbanization process is proposed. The forming of mutual coupling hypercycle between RTC and UA is the external development mechanism of RTC.The means of mutual coupling between RTC and UA are described in detail. The three kinds of development modes of RTC are put forward in order to establish the mutual coupling hypercycle with UA. It is concluded that establishing the Regional Mass Transit Corridor (RMTC), which has the route only for passenger mass transport, is the future development strategy of RPTC in UA. According to the planning of the regional rail transit in Guangshen TC, Guangzhu TC, the coupling effect between TC and Zhujiang Delta is discussed as a case.
