Finite element analysis modeling (FEAM) has been regarded as a narrow bottleneck for applying finite element analysis (FEA) for a long time, so it is a hot research topic all the while. By now a large number of research fruits about finite element automatic modeling have been achieved, but most of them are about automatic mesh of finite element. The modeling technology in FEA is rarely researched. Along with the development and the application of the parameterized feature-based modeling technology, the qualitative leap has taken place in CAD/CAM. This has promoted the automatic level of manufacturing industry. However, feature-based modeling technology in CAE has rarely been investigated. FEA-oriented feature-based modeling has also scarcely been studied, and feature-based modeling is generally for machine manufacturing. It is very necessary to apply feature-based modeling technology in FEM. It's not only the need of finite element automatic modeling, but also the request of CAD/CAE integration. This paper made the application of feature based-modeling technology in FEM as the research topic, and mainly investigated some key problems as follow. The development of FEAM technology was systematically reviewed and summarized. By the sequence: three-dimensional wire frame modeling, curved surface modeling, solid modeling, feature-based modeling, non-manifold geometric modeling, the development of computer aided geometric modeling technology was systematically discussed and summarized. The current situation of the application of feature-based modeling in FEA was analyzed. The current situation and development trends of CAD/FEA integration were also analyzed. Based on this, the research focal points and main contents of this paper were established. The research goal of this paper is to probe into a series of key problems of the feature-based FEAM in order to realize the closely integrating of CAD/FEA and the feature-based automatic FEAM.The design-oriented feature-based modeling technology was systematically reviewed and summarized. The feature definition in CAD modeling, the feature classification, the connection of features, the general methods of feature-based modeling, the feature expressions and the realization principle of feature-based modeling were expatiated in detail. The basic frame of finite element analysis modeling which is based on feature was put forward. That is to add the analysis attribute features to the CAD model and form the attribute model, to carry on the feature-based detail editing and dimensionality reducing and symmetrical simplifying and form the idealization model, to auto-mesh the idealization model so as to form the input file for finite element analysis. The author pointed out, in order to realize the feature's auto-transform, we must develop the attribute model editing machine, the detail editing machine, the editing machine for dimensionality reducing, the editing machine for symmetrical simplifying, and FEA mesh automatic generator based on feature. So that if any feature changes in any editing machines, it will lead the automatic changes of all models, thus it can build a solid foundation for realizing the bi-directional linkage action of design and analysis, it can also build a solid foundation for realizing the self-adaptation of design-analysis-redesign. This paper studied the feature definition and its classification of feature-based FEAM for the first time; enriched and developed the concept of virtual geometry; presented the methods for localizing and representing the attribute features; discussed the modeling principle of attribute features and its implementation method; then proposed the model frame of CAD/FEA system integration; finally, discussed the feature mapping and the relevant technology which supports the system integration of CAD/FEA, and presented some conclusions. This paper studied the detail editing, dimensional reducing and the systematic simplifying of feature-based FEAM, and got a series of important results.? This paper discussed the non-manifold problems of finite element model, also discussed the automatic generation of the FEA mixed dimensional mesh based on feature.? Based on the methods presented by this paper, the application of feature modeling technology in ABAQUS software's pre-procession functional module was deeply analyzed, and some important modifying suggestion were presented. ABAQUS is a feature-based geometric modeling FEA system which suits for analyzing the large-scale non-linear finite element problems.
