The main purpose of this dissertation is developing a permanent magnet starting motor design expert system(PMSMDES) of high performance and improving the design level of PMSM. The research emphasis is lied on the key and common theories and methods.To improve the pole optimization ability of PMSMDES, the electromagnetic field inverse problem, i.e., pole optimization, is studied. On one hand, considering the effects of pole shape, magnetization mode, relative movement between stator and rotor, and brush shift, the 2D electromagnetic field analysis software of PMSM is developed in this dissertation. On the other hand, TABU algorithm, which is a kind of global optimization method, is improved by adopting a new convergence criterion suitable for engineering optimization, and the algorithm is verified by typical functions. As a result, the electromagnetic field inverse problem analysis software of PMSM, in which effective mesh modification method is adopted according to the concrete features of the problem, is developed, and pole optimization of "Audi 100" and "'mulan" starting motor is done by this software.To improve the calculation accuracy of PMSMDES, a series of key problems, which affect the calculation accuracy, is studied. Considering the effects of saturation, pole shape and magnetization mode, some important coefficients including the effective pole-arc coefficient, the effective armature length, the leakage coefficient, the air-gap coefficient, the effective housing length, and the effective magnetic circuit length of stator yoke, among which the last three are put forward firstly in this dissertation, are analyzed by 2D FEM, and a series of useful curves are given. The air-gap field distribution of PMSM ,which is the basis of the calculation of commutation performance, is studied by analytical method. Being based on the above studies, PMSM computer-aided design software is developed and verified by test results.To improve the design level of PMSMDES, the initial design knowledge-base and modification knowledge-base are obtained through collecting experts' designing expertise and the study of some iraportant problems, such as the selection of permanent magnet and pole structure, selection of brush, the performance needs determination method of PMSM, initial project determination, and et al To improve the knowledge expression and utilization level of PMSMDES, on one hand, a kind more audio-visual expression form of rules and a set of grammar rules of knowledge-base, on the basis of which the corresponding reasoning engine is designed, are defined. One the other hand, a new project-modification strategy, i.e. "the best modification control strategy ", which prompts the design process faster to the destination status, is proposed and used successfully in PMSMDES. Finally the PMSMDES of high performance is developed on the'basis of the above studies.
