A 2MJ capacitor-based pulsed power system (PPS) designed for the research of Electrothermal-Chemical (ETC) launcher is described. The electrical characteristics of the main components in the pulsed power and the load, plasma generator are investigated. The works are as follows:1. The setup of the 2MJ pulsed power system for ETC launcher research and the test results are described. The electrical power transfer characteristic and efficiency of the PPS are analyzed. The best load condition concerning load resistance, load power and electrical efficiency is achieved.2. With the application of Finite Element Method, the static magnetic field of the spiral type power inductor is analyzed. With the comparison of the results, the influence of the magnetic conducting shield is discussed.3. Diodes are employed in the capacitor-based pulsed power system as crowbar for protection of capacitors. As the programmable discharge of the PFN modules, the diode stacks in the modules triggered anteriorly maybe destroyed by the hazardous surge of pulsed current and voltage. To analysis the transient process during the diode reverse recovery, a model is used in the simulation. The reason of the diode stack is discussed and the protection circuit of the diode stack is designed. The oscillograms of the tests and experiments are presented.4. A 20-module programmable pulsed power system is designed with some simulation. The approach to build a compact PPS is discussed. The switching system is analyzed and an integrated pulsed trigger programmer is designed and the evaluation board has been made out.5. The electrical characteristic of the load of the pulsed power, plasma generator, is analyzed, which includes calculation of the inductance, recovery of the resistance power, and nonlinear property of the plasma arc resistance. The test results in different conditions and the effect of the plasma are presented.
