City is an aggregation and vehicle of various cultures. Urban historic heritage records the evolution of urban culture, and continues the power of both physical and mental civilization of human being. The large-scale urban construction of China in the past two decades has made urban historical heritage conservation faced with an unprecedentedly serious cultural crisis. The radical reason for this crisis is a value collision between modernity and tradition, or collision between development and conservation. Tension between them has formed major contradiction in urban historic heritage conservation."Value collision" is the core issue of urban historical heritage conservation addressed in this article, "Cultural Evolution and Value Collision in Urban Historic Heritage Conservation: Tension Among Aesthetic Modernity, Instrumental Reason and Tradition" is the topic of study.
