It is a multifunctional vessel designed for offshore production and storage and offloading of oil or gas. Now FPSO is one of the most important equipments in the offshore oil and gas industry and has good future prospects. The design and manufacture of FPSO started from 1970s. After thirty years development, the studies on the key technologies of the design and fabrication of the FPSO is more and more mature in the world. In China, researches about FPSO have started for a long time and there are many important results. But the overall design of FPSO has not been analyzed systematicly. And there is still short of research on the design of the mooring system.This paper give a synthetical analysis on the important influential factors that have been experienced during the design and fabrication of a FPSO, and the research is mainly focused on the design of the mooring system.Based on the study on Classification Society Rules about FPSO, and combined with the experience of design and manufacturing of a 150,000t FPSO, detailed analysis has been made about the overall design, general arrangement and reliability evaluation and other aspects using the analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy evaluation method. The principles in the overall design of the FPSO have been summarized. It is useful in the preliminary design of new FPSO.In order to let the shipyards can use the experiences of the building of general oil ship into the process of FPSO's manufacture, the differences between the FPSO and common oil ship are compared and listed in a table for the first time. The influential factors that ought to be considered in the design and fabrication of the FPSO are concluded based on the research.Using the hydrodynamic theory and numerical simulation method, a computer program about the computation of environment loads on FPSO has been developed. The design and model experiment of the mooring system has been studied. The research is mainly focused on the determining of environment loads. The linear Weibull function is used to calculate the parameter of design wave. Using the 3d panel method, the computation method of the wave load and motion of floating body has been developed. The computation about a FPSO's motion and hydrodynamic pressure on the hull surface has been carried out, and the long-term distribution of the loads is analyzed.
