Time-space Transfer And Consciousness-move Space

Feng Jizhong is one of the creators of School of Architecture & Urban Planning of Tongji University. He is also influential in bringing and promoting Modernism education to china. This thesis focuses on his thoughts in later years, mainly about methodology and practice of Consciousness-move Space (the word comes from Yangming Mind Study). It is different with his Theory of Architecture Space Composition in 60s. Space Composition is functionalism, it is methodology aimed to solve the relationship between space and function, while Consciousness-move Space intend to emphasize the interaction between subject and object under 4-dimension time-space environment, simultaneously, emphasize time and dispose sense quantity. It focus more on activate sense and express emotion and must based on skillful space composition; it is a new progress beyond Space Composition. Here, object is the changing 4-dimension time and space; subject includes the people inside and designer himself. What should be emphasized is, designer is a more seasoned individual, his expression and realm emerging, should be considered in design methodology.Feng Jizhong explored the Chinese classic poetic skills in his design include Fangta Garden, Helou Shelter and urban regeneration. With the emphasis of time, also the emotion of human being, the idea-image-form generation, expression of process, as well as 4-dimension time-space to reach the artistic conception of space. In this way, he accomplished his theory of Consciousness-move Space from methodology to practice. Fangta Garden is both a public park and a culture heritage park; it combines the feeling of classic together with modern architecture. The inner idea is "new with old", resemble feeling instead of form. Helou Shelter is the latest building finished in Fangta Garden, it was built up by bamboo and straw. Its main idea is to experience time-space transfer, to feel movement in still. It is a perfect example of Consciousness-move Space. Urban regeneration insist on the continuity of inhabitant's daily life, with over 80% population of the inhabitants kept, he employs strategies such as vertical lane system to improve quality and quantity of living space, and keep the emotion and memory of the city in development.This thesis starts from the overall view of his idea. After a simple introduction of his early thoughts, it focuses on the analysis and explanation of Fangta Garden and Helou shelter. Based on the research on Feng Jizhong's paper, photos and manuscripts, interviews, related theory and criticism, this thesis explains Consciousness-move Space step by step and finally draws a conclusion of his overall academic thoughts.
