Research On Space Partition Of Yuvuan Garden In Shanghai

Space partition in garden put an important role in functional partition and cultural expression. Yuyuan Garden is a Chinese garden that has changed a lot in spatial layout since it built, and there’re many methods of partition. With several ways, such as comparative analysis, on-the-spot investigation and document analysis, the essence and dross of partition in Yuanyuan Garden can be found, while the key to rationalizing garden layout, constructing space(spatial organization), and setting off poetic imagery of gardens can be summarized. It is of great significance to inherit traditional garden culture and design new space in the modern times.Begin with an overview of the complex historical changes of Yuyuan Garden, Then the related conception, such as definition, function and types of garden partition are studied in this article. Besides, comparison of the general partition situation, partition medium, partition methods, and spaces(including mental spaces) formed by partition between Yuyuan Garden in different times have been emphatically researched. Base on that, aesthetic significance and philosophy connotations of space partition in Yuyuan Garden have been concluded. Then, the space partition of Yuyuan Garden is compared with the partition of three famous Chinese Gardens in Suzhou (Humble Administrator’s Garden, Lingering Garden and Master-of-Nets Garden), to find out the partition characteristics of Yuyuan Garden and some partition defects of Yuyuan Garden in later period. Then, sum up the principles of space partition of the gardens on the Yangtze delta. Last, the article end up with some specific partition methods of gardens on the Yangtze delta in modern times and a vision of the garden partition design.
