The area of sea is seventy percent of the whole surface of earth. The marine fishery resource is one of the most precious natun.1 resources for human kind. The Geographical Information System (GIS) is the guarantee for marine fishery resource reasonably exploiting. The geographic features of sea have a great difference from those of land. Although GIS has been applied into marine fishery since 1970s, its development has been lagging behind the land G S.After analyze the spatial features and data characters of marine fishery, this paper has compared the advantages and disadvantages of raster model and vector one in marine fishery field; then put an emphasis on analyzing the importance of raster model to data analysis and spatial pattern exploration of marine fishery; and give the idea that the marine fishery GIS should be established mainly on raster model. The idea is embodied in two point of view. First, on the basis of correlative theory of observation data, the paper has studied the exploration of holistic structure and the measurement of local correlation based on the raster model. On one hand, the range matrix of spatio-temporal correlation has solved the problem of spatio-temporal interpolation of marine data. On the other hand, the measurement of local correlation has solved the problem of hot-spot and local s ructure detection. Second, the paper has also studied depiction of marine fishery based raster data model. It includes: the visualization on raster data explorating, the visualization of attribute data as thematic, the visualization of dynamic information, the difference depict of attribute data with the change of spatial scale, and etc.The study of this paper is linked with the national 863-planning project(818-07-02, 818-11-03) and the project of National Natural Science Foundation of China (40074001). The main methods have been embedded into the marine fishery GIS software, and the software has a wide application in china marine fishery Co.
