More than twenty years has passed since the theory of coupling agricultural systems inatiated by Ren Jizhou, academician of Chinese academy of science, in the middle and later of 1980s, but now the study is still restricted in discussing on the conceptions, mechanisims, functions of the agricultural coupling systems, and introducing on the ecological benefits and economic benefits qualitatively or semi-quantitatively after the agricultural systems were coupled. And also, the stuty regions were mainly restricted in the grassland, arid and semi-arid ecotone in the northern part of China. As to the weakness in the study on the theory of coupling agricultural systems, taking Maping town in Fujian province in southern part of China as a study region, we proposed a quantitative study on the theory of agricultural coupling systems, so that we can further understand the structures, functions, effects of the agricultural coupling systems, and also put them into practice to promote the agriculture production in a sustainable, highly effective, and stable state. The primary contents in this study are the following: (1) The conceptions of the productivity of agricultural coupling system and the ecological productivity were inatiated, and the criterion for evalutating the ecological benefits and economic benefits of the agricultural coupling system was unified. As to the productivity of the agricultural coupling system, three parts were included which were: the ecological productivity, the biological productivity (including the primary productivity of the plants, the secondary productivity of the animal husbandry and the tertiary productivity of the microbes), and the services productivity; the biological productivity and the services productivity were the sources where the farmers' income came from, therefore they were aggregated and called the economic productivity. It was also pointed out that there were 13 coupling modes of ecological productivity and economic productivity, and the comprehensive benefits of the agricultural systems can only be evaluated by the coupling mode of the ecological productivity and the economic productivity. Taking Maping town as a case, the productivity of the traditional agricultural system and the agricultural coupling system was analysed quantitatively. (2) With emergy theory and its analysis methods, the producing benefits, the producing effect on the agricultural environment, and its sustainability of the traditional agricultural system and the agricultural coupling system were analysed quantitatively; based on the emergy indices, the productivity, structure, effect of the agricultural coupling system were also quantitatively illustrated. (3) According to the producing fact of plants system and animal husbandry system in Fujian province, based on the matching situation between the surplus grain amout of plants system (free energy) and the grain amouts consumed in the grain consuming animal husbandry system, the coupling coordination degree of plants and animal husbandry system (CCDPAHS) was constructed, and the temprol and spatial changes of the CCDPAHS in Fujian province were analysed quantitatively. At last, in order to improve the CCDPAHS in Fujian province, the favourable conditions for developing grain frugal animal husbandry were analyzed, and the specific agricultural model to change the construction of the animal husbandry system and to coordinate the plants and animal husbandry system was also put forward.
