Patrinia scabra Bunge, growing mainly in the northestern part of China, has long been used as a traditional medicine for treating leukemia, cancers and for regulating host immune responces. Our investigation on its methanol extract has led to the isolation of 25 compounds. 21 of them were identified by physico-chemical properties and spectral analysis (IR, MS, 1HNMR, 2CNMR, 2DNMR, X-ray) as: [1R, 3S- (1α, 3α)]-l, 3, 6, 7-tetrahydro-1, 3-dimethoxy-4-(methoxymethyl) cyclopenta [c] pyron (1), [iS, 3R-(lα, 3cL)]-1, 3, 6, 7-tetrahydro-1, 3-dimethoxy-4-(methoxymethyl) cyclopenta [c] pyron (2), 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7-hexhydro-3-one-7-hydroxy-8- methylcyclopenta [c] pyron (3), 9a-1, 7-dibydro- 1 -43-O-(3-methylbutanoyl)-4- [(3-methyibutanoyi)-O-]methyl-6-one-8-a- hydroxymethyl-8-β-hydroxycyclopenta[c]pyron(4), [iS, 3R-( 1 a, 3a)]- 1, 3, 6, 7-tetrahydro- 1, 3-dimethyl-4- [(3 -methylbutanoyl)-O-] methyl-7-one-8-hydroxymethyl cyclopenta[c]pyron(5), 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7-hexhydro-3, 4, 7-trihydroxy-4-methyl-8-metbene cyciopenta[c]pyron(6), 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7-hexhydro-3, 7, 8-trihydroxy-4, 8-dimethycyclopenta [c] pyron(7), 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7-hexlirdro-3, 4, 7-trihydroxy-4, 8-dimethylcyclopenta [c] pyron(8), 2-(acetamide)yl benzenepropyl alcohol-2-(benzamide)yl benzenepropionic ester(9), 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-hexahydro-1 1, 13-dihydroxy-4-methyi-2H-3-benzoxacyclododecin -2, 10(1 H) -dione(curvularin, 10), 2-[(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)methyl]-4-[(4-hydroxyl -3- methoxybenzyl)methyl]-3.bydroxymethyi-tetrahydrofunan( 11), (?2, 6-bis (4?bydroxy - 3? 5?dimethoxyphenyl) -3, 7-dioxabicyclo[3, 3, 0]octane (Syringaresinol, Sub 12), 5, 7-dihydroxyflavone( 13), quercetin( 14), scopoletin( 15), hexadecylic acid-a-monoglyceride (16), ferulaic acid( 17), ferulyl aldehyde (18), oleanolic acid( 19), f3-sitosterol(20), β-sitosterol -3-ο-β-D-glucopyranoside (21). All compounds were obtained from Patrinia scabra Bunge for the first time. Among them, compound 1 to 8 are new iridoids and compound is a new type of alkioid. Besides, compound 10(curvularin), which was isolated from some kinds of fungus such as Curvularia lunata. Penicillium sterckii and proved to have cytotoxic effect, was first isolated from plant, and to our knowledge this is the first report about the isolation of curvularin in China. In vitro biological test of these compounds shows that compound 2, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12 was able to stimulate T and B lymphocyte proliferation.
