The Cough Variant Asthma (CVA) is a form of asthma where a chronic cough is the major symptom. It has been few reported on the CVA treatments with the Traditional Chinese Medicine. The dissertation presents the most recent clinical and experimental research progress on the CVA etiology, pathology, and treatments, discusses the classification, etiology, and Methodology of treatments from the Traditional Chinese Medical perspective.Based on the characteristics of CVA symptoms, Professor Chao En Xiang classified the disease into the "Gan Ke" or the "Non-Productive Cough" catagory in the Traditional Chinese Medical Normencreature, and first applied the Traditional Chinese Medical theory "Fengxiefangfei, xiezufeiluo, feiqishixuan, qidaoluanji" to the etiology of CVA. On the basis of the theory, a clinical research was conducted to treat CVA patients with the method "Su Feng Xuan Fei". Airway responsiveness, eosinophil, IgE, IL-5, and ITV hypersensitive test were evaluated before and after the treatment. It was shown that the effective rate was 96.67% with the treatment, which is better than the group with the Western drug treatment (P < 0.05). The study also show the patients in the treatment group display a significant improvement in the IVT hypersensitive response test, indicating the treatment method is effective in reducing airway hyper responsiveness and hypersensitiveness and preventing the disease reoccurring. To further investigate the mechanism of the Shu Feng Xuan Fei Fa treatment, we have established a guinea pig Cough Variant Asthma animal model according to the method described by Huston, and experimental treatment was applied to the animals with the CVA. The Airway Responsiveness, BALF neutrophil, eosinophil, ECP, IL-4, IL-5, IFN-r were evaluated during the animal experiments, and histological chemistry was utilized to display the histological change ofbronchitis tissue during the treatment. It has been shown that the Shu Feng Xuan Fei Fa treatment prevents the bronchitis from occurring, reduces the airway hyperresponsiveness, which is achieved by multiple pathways as follows, the Shu Feng Xuan Fei Fa treatment increases the IFN-r secretion from Thl cells, and inhibits the secretion of IL-4 and IL-5 from Th2 cells, which modulates the balance between Thl and Th2 secretion; the Shu Feng Xuan Fei Fa treatment reduces IL-5 level in BALF, inhibits the differentiation, proliferation, and activation of EOS, and decreases the release of ECP. All these effects synergistically reduce the inflammatory reaction of airways to the allergic factors. In summary, the clinical and animal experiment study suggests the Traditional Chinese Medical treatment of CVA with Shu Feng Xuan Fei Fa is an effective treatment, which is mainly achieved through an inhibition of airway hyperresponsiveness and a reduction of airway inflammatory response to allergens.
