Didirectionally Regulated Effects of traditional Chinese Material Medica(DRE)is a term being newly taken much notice of for the last two decades or so in a field of TCM study. DRE indicates the phenomena that the efficacies, reactions and treatments of counter-character ingredients of specific herbs which have been used for clinical practice can cause two counter-pathologic states to be balanced. DRE is the characteristic and advanced part of treatments in TCM.Though the term of DRE could not be found in ancient times, many medicinal and medical scholars from ages have commented and contemplated what is now called DRE and we can find much in oldern literatures. In recent twenty years or so, DRE has been seriously taking in on clinical researches and experiments.Generally speaking, DRE is determined by two factors: the first one is herbal medicine; the other is human body's mechanism. The component which contented in spechfic herbs makes the material base of DRE. The difference of human body's mechanism and constitution accounts for the unlikeness in reactions responding to counter-character ingredients. At the same time, the factors such as procedure, dose or blending ,etc. alter the quality and quantity of these herbs and influece the efficacy of DRE's actions.In this thesis, a large number of medicinal and medical literatures dating from ancient time to the present have been carefully investigated. Many aspects of DRE like definition, progress, theoretical basis, clinical applications and experiments and mechanism have been systematically sorted and summed.All these will be the help and groundwork for the further researches on DRE and provide the useful guide to TCM clinical trials.
