In this paper, the development history of quality-control on Chinese materia medica is analyzed systematically, and is revealed in detail, on which the development directions are displayed clearly before us. In summary, quality-control on Chinese materia medica is developing from identification based on external whole indexes to the control of components in medical herbs, from individual and discrete index identification to systematic and all-round aspect control as well as from identification based on one or several kinds of the components to the control on all components. Generally speaking, the quality-control of herbs is from the external whole indexes to inner all-round components. The identification based on finger-print spectra would be the most important way in quality-control on Chinese materia medica and is the platform of modern development of traditional Chinese medicine. The finger print spectra is the whole expression of all components and their contents of Chinese medical herbs. The qualitative and quantitative analysis methods focusing on only several components, and the classification based on the species of herbs as well as the identification in one-dimensional parameter space and two-dimensional mixed properties parameter spaces, especially, the classification of herbs without concerning with their own properties of herbs, all the methods mentioned ahead are incapable of analyzing the finger print spectra and identifying Chinese materia medica very exactly. The properties of Chinese materia medica are analyzed in detail in this paper. In different nature environments, the changes in inheritance, variation and expression of genes as well as in processing medical herbs can make components and their contents in herbs vary extremely. While owing to the stability of genes of species, the components of herbs possess the relative stability, the analysis on the finger print spectra should be carried out based on the inheritance and variation. Two independent indexes, common peak ratio and variation ratio have been built up on the basis above, in the two-dimensional parameter spaces. The identification in the two-dimensional spaces is of much stronger resolution ability than in one-dimensional space, because it analyzes finger print spectra from both similarity and difference. At the same time, the sequence expression of the two indexes, according to the value of common peak ratio of samples from high to low, can show the relation among different samples quantitatively and precisely, which makes the quality-control of Chinese materia medica from identifying species deep to distinguishing individual samples, even deeper to parts of components extracted with different solvents.Four kinds of systematic solvents: hexamethylene, chloroform, alcohol and water were applied to extract the different components orderly from Maca, and the finger print spectra of the components were measured and analyzed by virtue of the two indexes. The results show that the all components of Maca from Peru are extremely similar to them of Radix Ginseng; Panacis quinquefoli. The three-dimensional UV, HPLC and IR finger print spectra of components, extracted from then kinds of samples of Glycyrrhiza uralensis fisch a Glycyrrhiza inflata Batal, chloroform, alcohol and water were measured and analyzed by means of the two index sequence method. The results indicate that the UV finger print spectra are capable of identifying samples of different species from different districts, as well as of the plated and the wild effectively, further more, the variation ratio among them are very remarkable. Because of the relative poor repeatability of HPLC and some IR finger print spectra, aconcept: summation numerical finger print spectra(SNFPS) is put forward. The stability of analytical results of HPLC and IR finger print spectra is well modified by means of the SNFPS. More importantly, only depending on the finger print spectra of all components in herbs are the characteristics of species shown well. The developing tendency of the analys...
