Arundina graminifolia is a plant belonging to the Orchidaceae and is mainly used as an herbal medicine in Dai minority in Xishuangbanna of Yunnan province in China. It has been used as antidote, diuretic and demulcent in traditional medicine for a long time. However, no system studies on chemical constituents and bioactivities have been reported before. This dissertation has involved the studies on the chemical constituents and bioactivities of A. graminifolia. From the tuber of A. graminifolia, thirty-four compounds were isolated by solvent and chromatography methods, and twenty-seven structures were elucidated on the basis of physical-chemical property and modern spectral analysis (including IR,UV,1H-NMR,13C-NMR,1H-1H COSY,HMQC,HMBC,DEPT,EI-MS,FAB-MS and HR-MS). Two compounds were new, twenty-two compounds were isolated from genus of Arundina for the first time, and the others were known compounds from this genus. Two new compounds are both stilbenoids. One is named as arundinan [2- (p-hydroxyl benzyl)-3-hydroxy-5-methoxybibenzyl], the other is named as arundinaol [1-(p-hydroxyl benzyl)-7-hydroxy-2,4-dimethoxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene].On the basic of the research program towards the chemical investigation of this medicinal plant, pharmacological evaluation revealed that bibenzyls possessed remarkable anti-tumor activity in vitro. New HPLC/PAD analytical method capable of rapidly identifying and differentiating the main ingredients in the important herb was established. This method was successfully applied to the simultaneous quantification of four stilbenoids in tuber, stem and alcohol extract of A. graminifolia.Advances in the research of chemical constituents and pharmacological activities have been reviewed, and spectral characteristics of stilbenoids were summarized. All these work were foundation stone for the further research of A. graminifolia.A new antidepressant formulation YL102 has been investigated and developed on the basis of clinical uses and bioactivities. Pharmaceutical studies of this antidepressant have been made. The extraction and purification procedures have been created, and quality controls of both total effective ingredients and major constituents have been established.
