Background and Objective: Along with the development of technology, more and more people suffered with spinal cord injury(SCI) and the number is raising every year. The incidence of SCI is about 15 to 40 per million in the world every year. Because SCI can lead to a very high disablement rate—completely or partly function loss of aesthesis, action an urine and stool,now it is still a hot and difficult problem for scientists of every country that how to protect the injured cord effectively and promote its recovery. The consequence of SCI is determined by tow courses collectively—primary injury and secondary injury. Primary injury is inconvertible. So the treatment of SCI is mainly focused on the secondary injury including blood vessel changes, dropsy, dielectric changes, biochemistry changes, energy metabolism disorder etc. According to the studies recently, Apoptosis is an important way of secondary cell death in SCI. Some members of cysteingl aspareate specific protease (caspase) family participate in the transmission of sign of apoptosis. Among of them, Caspase-3 is the final executant of apoptosis. It is an important part of SCI treatment that how to interfere in it. The effect of inflammatory reaction mediated by cell factors in SCI was paid more and more attention to, among the cell factors, Interleukin-1β(IL-1β) has an important role—when it increases abnormally, it may participates in apoptosis. It is significant for revealing the mechanism of SCI to study the characteristic of apoptosis, the rule of the expression of Caspase-3 and IL-1βand especially the relationship among them. Some study showed that lipid peroxidation induced by oxyradical is one of important causes of secondary cord injury. Mitochodrial is the main place to produce oxyradical, and it has an important role in stabilizing cell internal environment, so it is a basis for looking for the way of protecting spinal cord from secondary injury to study the Mitochodrial changes of spinal cord cells after SCI. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, traumatic paraplegia caused by SCI belongs to the field of body laziness an paralysis. Its treatment is mainly depanded on promoting blood flow and dissolving stagnant blood, deoppilating DU meridian, dredging the meridian passage, increasing pneuma, invigorating the kidney and essence replenishment. The kidney is in charge of bone and produces essence, kidney injury dues to essenc injury, blood and essence alternates, and kidney produces essence depending on the incessant engorge of the spleen and stomach which is the foundation of acquired constitution and the souce of QI and blood metaplasia. Nourishing Piyin Remedy has the function of increasing pneuma and promoting blood flow, invigorating the kidney and essence replenishment, engorge spleen and stomach and so on. It can protect neurocyte by enhancing Mitochodrial's ability of antioxygen, accommodating phospholipid metabolism, inhibiting responsive gummosis and inflammatory reaction etc. there was no report on Nourishing Piyin Remedy's effect on SCI. Neurotrophic factor protect the spinal cord neurocyte in many ways. Bovine brain extract containing many neurotrophic factors has been demonstrated that it can promote the recovery of injuried peripheral nerve obviously, but there was no report on its effect on SCI. Traditional Chinese medicine and Bovine brain are more practical for their general source, low price and low side effect. This study showed the Nourishing Piyin Remedy's protective effect on neurocytes in secondary injury of SCI and its possible mechanism and showed the Bovine brain extract's prosthetic effect on SCI, its possible mechanism and the optimal route of administration, in order to provide a theory basis and a new way for clinical SCI remedy. 0bjective: To study the characteristic of apoptosis and the expression of interleukin -1β(IL-1β)and cysteingl aspartate specific protease(Caspase),as well as relation amony them and the influence of piyin remedy onthem after spinal cord injury(SCI) in rats.
