It is known that Schisanhenol (Sal) and Salvianolic acid A (Sai A) showed anti-lipid peroxidation activities in liver microsomes. The antioxidant activity of Sal and Sai A against oxygen radical and adriamycin induced mitochondrial toxicity was investigated in the present study. The effects of Sal and Sai A on the antitumor activity of adriamycin was also studied.1. Effects of Sal and Sai A on oxygen radicals induced mitochondrial toxicitySal and Sai A showed inhibitory effect against ferrous ion induced rat liver and heart mitochondrial lipid peroxidation (MDA formation), while mitochondrial ATPase activity which was inactivated by lipid peroxidation was protected by Sal and Sai A. The mitochondrial membrane rigidification, swelling, lysis and disintegration in the course of lipid perxidation induced by ferrous ion were significantly inhibited by Sal and Sai A. These results further confirmed that Sal and Sai A possess antioxidant activity.2. Direct oxygen radical scavenging effects of Sal and Sai A In electron spin resonance studies, Sal and Sin A showeddirect oxygen radical scavenging activities. Sal scavenged oxygen radicals produced by human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (Neu) stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). In Fenton reaction system, the inhibition rate of OH· by Sal was 34.4%. In xanthine-...
