This paper mainly deals with the origin and development of the theory of five movements and six climates, and regards that this theory is an important part of the basic theory of TCM, which first appeared in the chapters of Tianyuanji Dalun, Wuyunxing Dalun, Liuweizhi Dalun, Qijiaobian Dalun, Wuchangzheng Dalun, Liuyuan Zhengji Dalun, Zhizhenyao Dalun, Liujie Zangxiang Lun and Jiugong Bafeng of Yellow Emperor's Internal Canon. There is still dispute about the author and formation time of this theory, but usually it is held that these chapters were written in the East Han Dynasty, coincided with other chapters of Yellow Emperor's Internal Canon. The theory of five movements and six climates summarized the achievements and knowledge of medicine, astronomy, meteorology, geography, calendric calculation, yin-yang calculation, five elements in that time. Guided by the thought of correspondence between human and nature and affected by the astrology, it associated the astronomic meteorological changes of the nature with the state of the human body, to predict the weather changes of the nature and the occurrence of disease in the human body, and proposed the calculation modelas the guidance of the clinical prevention and treatment. The calculation model also has developed for long time with various formulas. In Tang Dynasty Wang Bing proposed that the first period of six climates begin on the Dahan of Chinese lunar calendar. In Song Dynasty Liu Wenshu held that there were two calculation models, that is, five movements system and six climates system, and both should be combined together according to the promoting and restricting relations of the five movements and six climates to predict the weather changes and disease. This paper summarizes the research of the previous researchers that the theory of five movements and six climates is an important part of basic theory of TCM, and though its formation and development are confined for it was developed from ancient time, the thought of correspondence between human and nature and retaliation of movements and climates in it still guides the clinical treatments. The calculation model should comply with that of the Yellow Emperor's Internal Canon to correspond with the weather changes. In order to evaluate the prediction of five movements and six climates on weather changes, 500 megabits weather data from 1951 to 2002 were downloaded from the National Meteorological Information Center, and 10 cities'data were chosen to be statistically calculated to evaluate two kinds of calculation model, that is, method A with Dahan of lunar calendar as the first day of six climates and method B with Lichun of lunar calendar as the first day of six climates. The results show that there is no obvious difference of the two methods, however, method B more complies with the practical conditions, and the confirmation rate in the central China is the highest in this evaluation. Hence, the theory of five movements and six climates cannot be denied, and more study is needed in the calculation with heaven stem and earth branch to find out the ancient astronomic background in it.Key words five movements and six climates; correspondence between human and nature; calculation model; weather; statistical evaluation...
