Purposes: Proliferation of subconjunctival fibroblasts with extracellular matrix production is the major cause of surgical failure after the glaucoma filtration surgery. Intraoperative application of mitomycin C (MMC) has been shown to be effective in enhancing the success rate of the surgery, but the exact mode of action by which MMC exerts its effects on fibroblasts is still not very clear. The retinal pigment epithelial cell (RPE) is the most important cell that plays a key role in the proliferative refinoretinapathy (PVR). Phenotypic shift occurs when RPE is stimulated by various factors in the environment; and during this process, RPE itself can secret some active factors to stimulate the other cells including fibroblasts, which also play a very important role in PVR through proliferation and extracellular matrix production. The mutual effects between RPE and fibroblasts largely influence the results of PVR. In...
