Objective To investigate the clinical significance of serum CEA, SCC and Cyfra21-1 in diagnosis, prediction of prognosis and monitor of postoperative recurrent disease for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).Method The serum CEA and Cyfra21-1 were measured with Elecsys 2010, CEA and Cyfra21-1 kits through Electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA). Serum SCC was measured with IMx System and SCC kit through Microparticle Enzyme Immunoassay (MEIA). Those three serum markers were measured preoperatively in 206 cases and postoperatively in 71 cases (7-12 days after resection) from January to December, 2002. The data was analyzed by Paired-sample T test, Independent-sample T test and Chi-square test in the SPSS 10.0.Results The cut-off value of CEA and Cyfra21-1 determined by the dataof 45 healthy Chinese measured during the same period was CEA (?)3.25ng/ml and Cyfra21-1(?)2.61ng/ml in this series. From the study of 206ESCC patients, the positive ratio of serum CEA and Cyfra21-1 was 29.1% and 45.1% respectively. The combined positive ratio of CEA and Cyfra21-1 was 57.3%. The CEA positive ratio of 165 resected cases according to pathological stages were 16.6% (stage I), 26.8% (II), 30.8% (III). For Cyfra21-1, they were 27.8% (stage I), 37.5% (II), 50.5% (III) and for CEA combined with Cyfra21-1, they were 38.9% (stage I), 50.0% (II), 63.7% (III). The mean value of CEA, SCC and Cyfra21-1 was found to be well correlated with tumor size, TNM stage and depth of tumor invasion. The patients with bulky tumors, advanced stage tumors(T4) usually had much higher mean...
