Yajiaohadun-San is a classical formula of the traditional Daizu Medicine, which has been widely used for the treatment of flu fever, laryngitis, cough and bloody aputum, heart-throb, menstruation and postpartum hemorrhage etc. among Dai folk region in southwest China. The formula consists of six kind of medicinal herbs, Streptocaulon griffithii, Tacca chantrieri, vitex trifolia. var. simplicifolia cham. and V. trifolia, Benincasa hispida, Asparagus pseudofilicinus and Inula cappa.. However, detailed phytochemical studies on these plants have yet been documented seldom to date. Therefore, the main objective of the present study was to systematically investigate on the chemical constituents of two compositions, S. griffithii and T. chantrieri, of the formula with also a view to establishing the quality standards of S. griffithii. In addition, the cytotoxic activity of cardenolides has drawn much attention in recent years. As a result, the cardenolides isolated from S. griffithii was subject to screening of cytotoxic activity.Phytochemical studies in the present study were carried out using modern chromatographic techniques such as MPLC and HPLC and had led to the isolation of 20 and 16 compounds from the radix of S. griffithii and the rhizomes of T chantrieri, respectively. Subsequently, the structure of these compounds were elucidated using spectrometric approaches, including IR, UV, 1HNMR, 13C NMR, DEPT, 1H-1H COSY, HMQC, HMBC, NOESY, EIMS, FABMS...
