1. The Progress on the Synthesis of Oligosaccharides Related to Bacterial O-AntigenThe O-polysaccharides of bacterial lipopolysaccharides are in general regular, periodic polymers with divers structures. The O-oligosaccharides that constitute the repeating units of these polysaccharide antigens provide a demanding challenge in terms of glycoside synthesis, an objective which is particularly important since these structures act as antigenic determinants which are valuable markers of bacterial infection. Advances in glycoside synthesis together with the ancillary techniques of chromatographic separation and high resolution NMR spectroscopy have permitted rational synthesis of such O-oligosaccharides to be planned and successfully completed. In the past several years, most intensive synthetic efforts have focused on the O-antigens of Salmonella, Shigella, and E. coli. In addition, the author also introduce the novel methods of synthesis in carbohydrate chemistry, including those of trifluoroacetate ester, trichloroacetate ester and enzymatic methods.2. Synthesis of Oligosaccharides Related to the Serratia marcescensMolecular recognition processes, the most frontier research in the area of molecular biology and mediated by carbohydrate recognition markers, are widespread and range from antigen-antibody interaction to cell-cell recognition and development. Serratia marcescens, once thought to be a kind of harmless gram-negative bacteria, are widely distributed in soil, in water, and on plant surfaces. In recent years, however, the clinical results showed they are responsible for a number of serious infection in hospitals. In this part, we report the synthesis of O18 (Compound 28), O17, and 019 (Compound 30) antigenic determinant biological repeat units — blocked O-oligosaccharides — with the methods of trichloroacetimidate ester and...
