Esophageal carcinoma (EC) is one of the most common cancer worldwide with sharp variation in its incidence among different countries , different geographic areas and different ethnic groups. In western countries, heavy cigarette smoking and alcohol intake are thought to be mojor risk factors, whereas in some regions of Asia and Africa, exposure to dietary carcinogens and nutritional deficiencies are believed to be major etiological factors. In recent years,with the finding of HPV infection and p53 mutation in tissues of EC, the relationship between HPV infection, p53 mutation and EC have caused interests of many researchers. More and more reports were presented. Up to date, however, the exact etiology, mechanism of carcinogenesis and the causes of striking geographic distribution of EC are not fully explored.
