Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb., has been used for the treatment of acute brain fever, measles and herpes zoster as a folk medicinal herb. Pharmacological studies indicated that the extract of A. philoxeroides has antivirus, antibacterial, and molluscicidal activities. By column chromatography, including Silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, Toyopearl HW-40 and semipreparative HPLC, twenty nine compounds were isolated from the EtOH extract of A. philoxeroides and elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods, including nine new compounds: 1 (3β,12β-dihydroxyoleanan-28,13β-olide-3-O-β-D-6'-O-methylester-β-D-glucuronopyranoside), 2(3β,12α-dihydroxyoleanan-28,13β-olide-3-O-β-D-6'-O-methylester-β-D-glucuronopy ranoside), 3 (3-O-β-D-6'-O-methylester-glucuronopyranosyl-oleanan-12-one28-oic acid), 4(3β,20β-dihydroxy-30-norolean-12-en-28-oic acid-3-O-β-D-6′-O-methylester-β-D-glucuronopyranoside), 5(3β,20β-dihydroxy-30-norolean-12-en-28-oic acid), 6(oleanolic acid 3-O-[β-D-mannurono-γ-lactonyl]-28-O-β-D-glucopyranoside), (3-O-[β-D-glucuronopyranosyl-6'-O-methyl]-30-norolean-12,20(29)-dien-28-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl] ester), 8 (luteolin 6-C-β-L-boivinopyranoside), 9 (N-trans-feruloyl-3,5-dimethoxytyramine), together with fourteen known compounds (13-18, 20-24 and 26-28 ) from this plant for the first time. The values of inhibition percent of compounds against HepG 2.2.15 cells transected with cloned hepatitis B virus DNA was evaluated. Compounds 10-12, 16, 17 and 20 showed positive anti-HBV activity. The anticancer effect of compounds was screened by MTT method in vitro. Compounds 8-9, 11, 14, 17 and 19 showed anticancer activity. Abacopteris penangiana ( Hook. ) Ching has been used to treat upper respiratory tract infections and dysentery. Two new flavan-4-ol glycosides, [(2R,4S)-5,7-di-β-D-glucopyranosyloxy-4'-methoxy-6,8-dimethyl-4,2''-oxo-flavan] (30)and[(2R,4S)-6,8-dimethyl-7-hydroxy-4'-methoxy-4,2''-oxidoflavan-5-O-β-D-6''-O-acetyl-glucopyranoside] (31), along with six known compounds ( 32-37 ) were isolated from the air-dried rhizomes of A. penangiana.
