Mongolian and Manchu are two of the influential languages of Mongolian language group and Manchu-Tungus language group in Altai language family. This dissertation, by applying description method, analyzes and discusses comprehensively as well as systematically the categories of number, case, possession, gender and general reference of noun words in Mongolian and Manchu languages. On the basis of the above categories, research methodologies of historical comparative linguistics are carried out to compare the similar and corresponding relationships expressed in the way of phonetic forms and grammatical meanings between Manchu and Mongolian nouns and to explore the rules of developmental change.This dissertation consists of five parts:the introduction, chapter one, chapter two, chapter three and conclusion.The introduction is mainly about the research purpose, meaning, methodology, source of materials and the literature reviews on grammatical categories of nouns in Mongolian and Manchu languages from the point of domestic and foreign studies.The first chapter comprehensively grasps and fully absorbs the research results from domestic and foreign scholars on grammatical categories of Mongolian nouns to systematically analyze the words related to categories of number, case, possession, gender and general reference as well as grammatical forms and meaning, conjunctive characteristics and ways of expressions so as to further elaborate the rule of developmental change.The second chapter comprehensively grasps and fully absorbs the research results from domestic and foreign scholars on grammatical categories of Manchu nouns to systematically analyze the words related to categories of number, case, possession, gender and general reference as well as grammatical forms and meaning, conjunctive characteristics and ways of expressions so as to further elaborate the rule of developmental change.The third chapter adopts and draws on the previous research results to compare the similar and corresponding relationships in morphology and meaning of these categories of number, case, possession, gender and general reference of noun words in Mongolian and Manchu languages. In the following, the early forms are reconstructed and the rules of developmental change are discussed.The conclusion part summarizes the whole content and sums up the main research findings.
