Jack Body, New Zealand composer and ethnomusicologist, who is fascinated by the folk music of Asia-Pacific region. As the descendant of European, Jack Body is under the influence of the western culture deeply. So at the start, he is not obsessed with non-western music culture. In order to followed the western Avant-garde composers’ footsteps, he had went to Europe to study ‘the most fashionable’ western composition techniques and concepts in the 20 th century. However, in the 70 s of the last century, in a gradual way, Jack Body consciously began to get rid of the shackles of western culture. He went to many Asian countries, especially Indonesia and China. After collected local folk songs, than he done some researches on them and created numerous refreshing works which used the collected material. These creation which based on the folk music material not only expanded Jack Body’s personal style, but also made him world famous.With the pace of explore the non-western world, occidental composers pay more attention to the oriental music which Chinese folk music as the representative. More and more occidental composers get inspiration and material from Chinese folk music for new works. As one of the most representative, Jack Body has got a broad range of interior Chinese folk music material for nearly three decades-long association with China. He contributed to the disseminate and develop of Chinese music by has been composing a number of works which are intriguing and with unique style. In this dissertation, I will take Jack Body’s works which with ‘Chinese elements’ as a starting point, than take two mixed media chamber music- ‘Interior’ and ‘Beat’ as an example. By doing this, on one hand, to explore all levels of ‘Chinese elements’ which are involved in the works, on the other hand, to study the characteristics of Jack Body’s composition techniques and the humanities connotation from this two specific works which are combined with ‘Chinese elements’.The first chapter of this dissertation is about Jack Body’s life, creative staging, as well as an overview of the creative concept and the main composition techniques in his works. In the second chapter I will briefly review the phenomenon of the western composers combined with ‘Chinese elements’ in the historical context, the relationship of Jack Body and Chinese music, and introduce his major works which are contained with the ‘Chinese elements’ in a short way. The third and fourth chapters are the analysis of the music structure, the pitch organization and the feature of timbre in ‘Interior’ and ‘Beat’. In the fifth chapter, I will summarize the characteristics of the composition techniques according to the two works, and interpret the humanistic connotation in them. At last, the overall evaluation of Jack Body’s works about ‘Chinese elements’ will be established and I will also discuss the reflection and enlightenment from his successful compositional experience.
