In the period from 1949 to 2014, the development of calligraphy and seal cutting in Shanghai was basically the same as the national development, but also had its own characteristics. After the founding of new China, the biggest calligrapher group represented by Yinmo Shen and Jiao Bai promoted the study of copybook. Although famous calligraphers like Quchang Wang and Chusheng Lai studied the rubbings, the study of copybook was still the mainstream in terms of the overall trend of calligraphy and seal cutting style in Shanghai. After a frenzy of calligraphy and seal cutting wave in the 1980s, the calligraphy and seal cutting creation in Shanghai was gradually becoming more of a creative pattern of introspection and multi-values. Some people blindly advocated tradition, some balanced between the copybook and rubbings, some could inclusively digest in full, and some even tried to deconstruct and remodel the traditional calligraphy structure. In terms of the seal cutting, many master in Shanghai attached great importance to the tradition and mentoring relationship, who comprehensively inherited ancient seals of the Qin and Han dynasties, official seals of the Tang and Song dynasties, the Ming and Qing dynasties genre, and various other precious essence of each period. It can be said that from the time Yinmo Shen taking charge of the calligraphy field, to the return-of Quchang wang, Zhiliu Xie, etc. ten years later, until the day when Huijun Zhou, Tianheng Han together with the team of Calligraphers Association who shared a common ideal proposed "Carry forward the fine traditions, revitalize Shanghai Calligraphy", Shanghai finally presents an integration of rubbings and copybook under an open and multiple situation. This paper focuses on the basic methods of art history research, trying to inductively analyze by gathering huge amount of first-hand information on the sixty-five years of development and creative aspects of calligraphy and seal cutting in Shanghai, instead of simply listing the documents and explanations of the catalogue. At the same time, the creative features of representative calligraphers and seal cutting masters of each period are analyzed. Finally, the 65 years overall development trend of calligraphy and seal cutting in Shanghai from 1949 to 2014, the overall trend of creative style and individual creative style characteristics are summarized.
