A Study On The Vocabulary Of Mr. Hui

Zhuzi Yu Lu is a record of the questions and answers between Zhu Xi, the great Confucian scholar of Song dynasty, and his disciples. It is not only a manifestation of Zhu Xi’s idealist Confucian philosophy, but also a reflection of the general social, economic, and cultural outlook of Song dynasty.The compiling of Zhuzi Yu Lei has referred to the “five records” and the “three collections”, among which Hui’an Xian Sheng Yu Lu Lei Yao(abbreviated to Lei Yao in the following texts) is the extraction of Zhu Xi’s idealist Confucian philosophy in Zhuzi Yu Lei. Different editions have different features and the important value on document. The study on document arrangement and vocabulary system of Lei Yao has not started.The editions studied in this thesis are Hui’an Xian Sheng Yu Lu Lei Yao collected in Fudan University(abbreviated to Fudan Edition in the following texts) and Kyoto University(abbreviated to Kyoto Edition in the following texts) in Japan. Meantime, we also choose Zhuzi Yu Lei collected in Kyushu University in Japan(abbreviated to Kyushu Edition in the following texts) and Zhuzi Yu Lei carved by Chen Wei in the Cheng Hua period in Ming dynasty(abbreviated to Chenghua Edition in the following texts) as the reference materials. The collected textual criticism is formed on the basis of the four editions. This thesis consists of six chapters and focuses on the study of editions and language of Lei Yao on the basis of full-text comparison and proofreading between Lei Yao and Zhuzi Yu Lei.The forewords introduces the editing formation of the Yu Lus and Yu Leis, briefly reviews the previous research done by the scholars since the beginning of 20 th century, and proposes the methodology of the thesis and its significance.The first chapter elaborates on the editions and general picture of linguistic materials in Lei Yao and proves the editor, Ye Shilong, and when the book was finished. The origin and development of the four editions is studied on the basis of the detailed description of Fudan Edition, Kyoto Edition, Kyushu Edition and Chenghua Edition.The second chapter fully describes the vocabulary composition of disyllable, trisyllable and quadrisyllable in Lei Yao.The third chapter analyzes the new words and new meanings of Lei Yao, especially the new meanings of monosyllable and the new words and new meanings of polysyllabic words and inspect the exact meanings of them.The fourth chapter focus on the system of parallel double-syllable word and give specific description of lexical transformation and development of “Wan Quan”, “Si Xian”, “Kong Pa”, “Mai Mai” and “Zuo You”. The characteristics of the lexical transformation and development of parallel double-syllable word is concluded as the two monosyllable playing the role as morpheme in the parallel double-syllable word have not only a certain correlation but also semantic condensation and the vitality of parallel double-syllable word can be reflected by the gradual development of meanings and the grammaticalization of the formed word.The fifth chapter give specific description of the meaning system of the verb “Song” and the word group of “Zhong Jie”, one of the meanings of “Song” from the perspective of the system of vocabulary and the system of the word meanings.The sixth chapter summarizes the significance of research on Lei Yao from the perspectives of bibliography and linguistics.The appendix lists the collected textual criticism on Hui’an Xian Sheng Yu Lu Lei Yao.
