‘Imperial-court decorative painting’ originally referred to the painting which painted by imperial art academy painters who were requested by the Emperor., imperial art academy painters formed the unique style in their long-term practice. Later, it is the painting which average painters imitate in a general sense. It is the historical product. Its aesthetic form reflects a part of people’s aesthetic taste and aesthetic style under the specific historical conditions. After the development of Tang, and the Five Dynasties, in the Song Dynasty, it reached a mature level in the Song regardless of the theory or the practice.About imperial-court decorative painting, the reason for choosing the view of a painter’s point, is because I found, in North Song Dynasty, painting talent structure was relatively complex under the influence of social, historical and other factors. The painters of court fine art had different identities before entering it. The identity difference affected the knowledge structure and aesthetic taste about the artist group, influenced the whole painting style further. The effects from the painters of outside can not be ignored. In the Song Dynasty, the most prominent ‘literati painting’ and ‘imperial-court decorative painting’ competition, came down to the identity. Literati painting looked down on the imperial-court decorative painting was due to majority imperial art academy painters came from a humble, and were not well-educated. Although as imperial officials, they had many restrictions on the position, promotion and so on. But as the mainstream cultural tendency favored by the Royal, they had an unshakable status.The paper analyses from Song Dynasty imperial-court decorative painting Painters’ identity, the Northern Song painters’ official changes, imperial art academy system, learning and cultivation and the aim of imperial-court decorative painting under the emperor influence, imperial-court decorative painting education knowledge and background, knowledge and retro style of the realm of Song Dynasty and so on, in order to further understand imperial-court decorative painting of Song Dynasty.
