Blood And Education In The Background Of Ancient And Modern

Modern society is a world full of crises and the most serious one is the crisis of human spirit. Its representation is timid souls or wildly erratic spirit, and all these can show that it does not understand and treat thymos well in modern society especially in education. Thymos is a part in human nature that causes men to have the feeling of indignation and pride, and it also arouses the sense of right and the desires for great, domination, victory and glory in human heart. Its essence is a passion for politics that always fight for its assumed natural order of right. In this article I am trying to rediscover the significance of thymos, and show its fortune in ancient and modern education. By doing that, it can helps us to realize the purpose of better understanding and educating thymos, and then find the possibility of having an education which can perfect our human nature.I think the only way to have a better understanding about thymos is to restart the quarrel between ancient and modern education because its misunderstanding arises from that modern education broke its relationship with ancient education. Modern education refuses to understand human by the way of ancient teleology, which means that refuses to admit thymos’s feeling of transcendence of natural right and its capable of knowing. This is the reason why ancient and modern education treats thymos so differently, and also the reason why thymos went through a process of suppression, elimination and indulgence in modern education. In order to get better understanding about thymos, it is the key point for us to reflect the rationality of the rejection to ancient education in modern education.In this research I have the basic conclusion that it is not reasonable to refuse thymos’s feeling of natural right in modern education. We ought to get a better understanding about true life of natural right through unceasingly quest even though we can not occupy it thoroughly. By doing that we can have a life of loving wisdom which is also the true meaning of philosophy as a way of life. In this life, thymos will be well guided and educated and then become the great impulse for our soul to pursue wisdom and perfect our human nature. Thus the purpose of education becomes that, by the teaching of the philosophic teachers such as Socrates education can guide men realizing the superiority of the life of loving wisdom and reflecting their souls all the time. Then they can become righteous men who have right indignation and pride and also have outstanding virtue and knowledge, and then have suitable anticipation towards politics. In order to educate thymos better and perfect our human nature, it is necessary for modern education to go back to ancient poetic education because of the close relationship between philosophy and poetry.
