As the capital city of six dynasties and cotemporary China, Beijing has been, for along time, one of the most important tourism destinations in China. In recent years, thecity’s tourism market is unprecedented booming, in which the number of tourists andthe tourism income have both reached new heights. Problems of urban space in Beijingtourism are being increasingly obvious and the need for tourist space optimization isaccordingly urgent.Tourism is the activities of people traveling to and staying in places outside theirusual environment for a short time, mainly for leisure purpose. As the spatial carrier oftourism, tourist space is the existence form of tourism arctivities. Tourist space incontemporary Beijing accommodates the overall relationship between tourists’ multipleactivities and the urban space. At present, Beijing receives hundreds of millions oftourists every year. Studies on tourist space will contribute the improvement of touristexperience and urban attraction, and will also reveal an important slice of the wholeurban environment.Based on the characteristics of tourism and by means of the theories of urbanplanning and architecture, the contemporary tourist space in Beijing will be inspected,through which some further optimizing strategies and development proposals will bepresented. First, the concepts of tourism and tourist space will be defined. Three basichierarchies of tourist space studies will be put forward afterwards, including factorstructure, leisure quality and foundation support. Then through an investigation of theoverall appearance, three main issues of contemporary tourist space in Beijing will besummed up, namely, the imbalance of factor structure, the dissatisfaction of leisurequality and the instability of foundation support. In the main body of this dissertation,studies of cotemporaty tourist space in Beijing will be divided into nine parts in theframework of the three hierarchies and their issues. Each part will focus on thecharacteristics, layouts, detail types, current problems of the space, and then presentsome development strategies through comparative studies. Lastly, a long-term goal ofconstructing “World Tourism Capital” will be put forward through the summary of the advantages and challenges in Beijing’s tourist space, for which, some furtherdevelopment strategies be discussed.This dissertation is an exploratory basic study on contemporary tourist space inBeijing. It attempts, from the perspective of tourism, to examine the comprehensive andlarge-scale urban environment of the metropolis, which is expected to be helpful to theongoing Urban Tourism Planning of Beijing. Unremitting, in-depth and expandedstudies are also expected in the future, to contribute more in the improvement of variousaspects in the urban space of Beijing, such as urban structure, space quality,infrastructure, historical culture conservation and environmental protection.
