It is difficult to predict consumer demand and competitor action in the dynamic environment. How to obtain and maintain competitive advantage through technology innovation has become the key to the sustainable development of enterprises. However, with the improvement of technical complexity, internal resources can not meet the demand for sustainable innovation, opening becomes an inevitable choice for enterprise innovation practice. In the background of open innovation, boundary-spanning search become an important way to explore innovation resources and solve the problem, and boundary-spanning search is one of the effective ways to improve enterprise innovation capability and competitive advantage.However, existing literature mainly explores the direct influence of boundary-spanning search on innovation, and do not uncover the intermediate process. Except that, the research situation mainly focuses on large-scale enterprises in developed counties, with less attention left for Chinese science-technoloy SMEs.In this context, based on boundary-spanning search research in open innovation and organizational learning, we carry out the study exploring ’how to boundary-spanning search influence Chinese science-technoloy SMEs innovation performance’. Specifically, the study uses technological knowledge boundary-spanning search and market knowledge boundary-spanning search as the characteristic variables to describe boundary-spanning search, and respectively analysis the impact mechanism of boundary-spanning search on innovation performance based on dynamic capability theory, and the impact of environment dynamics on innovation performance in depth. The study used survey method to obtain data of 52 science-technoloy SME in small sample forecast and 289 science-technoloy SME in big sample survey. In this paper, the relevant data is statistical analyzed to study the relationship of boundary-spanning search and science-technoloy SMEs innovation performance, the mediating role of dynamic capability and the moderating role of environment dynamics. The main conclusions are as follows:First, there is a significant positive influence on science-technoloy SMEs innovation performance of boundary-spanning search. Specifically, the cognitive boundary-spanning search of technological knowledge, the geographical boundary-spanning search of technological knowledge, the cognitive boundary-spanning search of market knowledge and the geographical boundary-spanning search of market knowledge all have significant influence on innovation performance. The study also found that market knowledge boundary-spanning search has a greater positive influence on innovation performance compared with technological knowledge boundary-spanning search.Second, there is significant positive influence on dynamic capabilities of technological knowledge boundary-spanning search and market knowledge boundary-spanning search. Technological knowledge boundary-spanning search has significant positive influence on organizational reconfiguration capability, but has not significant influence on resource integration capability, technological knowledge boundary-spanning search has significant positive influence on the two dimensions of dynamic capabilities.Third, there is significant positive influence on science-technoloy SMEs innovation performance of dynamic capabilities. Specifically, resource integration capabilities and organizational restructuring capacity both have significant positive impact on innovation performance.Fourth, dynamic capabilities plays a mediating role between technological knowledge boundary-spanning search and science-technoloy SMEs innovation performance, plays a mediating role between market knowledge boundary-spanning search and innovation performance.Fifth, there is a moderating role of environmental dynamics between boundary-spanning search and science-technoloy SMEs performance. Market dynamics has a significant moderating role on the relationship between boundary-spanning search and innovation performance, technological dynamics has a significant moderating role on the relationship between market boundary-spanning search and innovation performance, while the moderating role on the relationship between technological boundary-spanning search and innovation performance is not significant.Sixth, there is a moderating role of environmental dynamics between dynamic capabilities and science-technoloy SMEs innovation performance, moderating role of market dynamics and technological dynamics between them are both existed.
