The trend of globalization, informatization and development of industries around "Internet+" in recent years drive the main economic regions and city clusters into a new round of upgrade and optimization of their industrial structures and industrial division and cooperation. In worldwide, multiple national policies have come onto stage such as the "A Framework for Revitalizing American Manufacturing" by Obama administration in 2009, "Industrie 4.0" by Germany government in 2013, and "China Manufacturing 2025" by Chinese State Council in May 2015, which is a sign of closer attentions given by China and the whole world on the industrial upgrade. The main economic regions will explore the optimized path for industrial division and cooperation, in order to elevate the regional competitiveness and to adapt to the emerging tendency of the global economic development. The guidelines to develop Yangtze River Economic Belt has been released by Chinese central government, which symbolizes that the Yangtze River Economic Belt development has been upgraded to a national strategy. The comprehensive development of Yangtze River Economic Belt is of great importance to bridge gaps among the upper, middle and down streams of the Belt, as well as to harmonize the regional relationships. Theories and practices of economic development illustrates that there is a special relevance between industrial division and cooperation and economic development, they show a same pace of evolution. The level of the industrial division and cooperation becomes one of the key measurements of the development of the society and economy. In this thesis, we have chosen the Yangtze River Economic Belt as a typical geographic area, and conducted the research based on the theories of geography, evolutionary economy, social networks and spatial interaction. We have clarified the evolution regularity, the inherent mechanism, the spatial components, and the interactivities of the factors, then conducted an empirical analysis on three levels -macro, middle and micro levels, based on which we reached the conclusion how the factors impact the industrial division and cooperation and the optimization path, in order for providing a guideline of the comprehensive development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and therefore a harmonious development of the China economy and society towards the goal of prosperity for all. This thesis is divided into eight chapters which can be grouped into three parts: The first three chapters (Part One) is theoretical analysis. In Part One we differentiated and analyzed related concepts, discussed the precedent theoretical outcomes, then conducted the theoretical analysis from geographic, economic and sociological stand views, based on which we set up the theoretical mechanism and research framework of regional industrial division and cooperation; Part Two, empirical analysis, consists of next four chapters, in chapter four to six the mechanisms, characteristics and impacting factors of the industrial division and cooperation evolution are addressed in macro, middle and micro levels, chapter seven collects and analyses the best practices in a global view, so as to gain from the worldwide experience for the Yangtze River Economic Belt; in Part Three we drew the conclusions, discussed and proposed the possible development paths for industrial division and cooperation in Yangtze River Economic Belt and made some prospects.Research in this thesis makes the main conclusions that:(1) The Yangtze River Economic Belt industrial division and cooperation shows the internal unity of the temporality and spatiality, the regional industrial division and cooperation evolution is inherently a process of reorganization of the industrial factors on the temporal axis-special axis plane. Temporality-wise, it is divided into four phases as "low-level distributed, agglomeration, radioactive proliferation and network-based development"; spatiality-wise, it shows an evolution of "atom-dot-plane-zone", in other words, "enterprise-core cities-city network-economic belt".(2) The evolution of regional industrial division and cooperation is featured with compositionality, stratification, temporality and spatiality. The research of the Yangtze River Economic Belt industrial division and cooperation evolution should be conducted with respect to the above features across disciplines. In macro level, it is the evolution of the spatial relationship, agglomeration and interactivities of the industrial main bodies and factors; in middle level, as the main bodies and configuration centers of the regional industrial division and cooperation, cities play a vital role in terms of their functionality, structural upgrade; in micro level, enterprises are the entities that have significant impact on the evolution path of the industrial division and cooperation.(3) As the upgrading of essential productive factors and facilitation of the communication of these factors, the impacting contributing factors of the regional industrial division and cooperation turns from congenital factors into acquired and advanced factors. In macro level research, a quantitative analysis reveals a tendency of "less-more-less" of agglomeration in industry, an analysis of impacting factors of industrial division and cooperation done by Stata shows a rising impact of innovative, communication network and clusters, hi-tech parks and other industrial clusters are main special bases for activities such as industrial agglomeration and distribution, creative research and industrialization, thus to strengthen the cross-regional ties and cooperation between clusters is an efficient way of upgrading industrial division and cooperation in Yangtze River Economic Belt.(4) Cities are the main supporters and participants in regional industrial division and cooperation, the interconnections with other cities determines the depth of the cooperation, the association index is one of the spatial features of the regional industrial division and cooperation. A quantitative computation of the association index based on gravity model and Ucinet tool demonstrates that a networked industrial division and cooperation has taken shape in Yangtze River Economic Belt. The city interconnections is closest in downstream area, less close in middle stream, and weakest in upper stream with only a primary form of network.(5) Enterprises are the micro-cells of the regional industrial division and cooperation. The incorporation network development contributes to networking of the industrial division and cooperation. The scale and complexity of incorporation network is one of the key measurements of the level of the regional industrial division and cooperation evolution. A quantitative analysis on the spatial distribution of the Yangtze River Economic Belt enterprise network shows that Shanghai is a core node of the network while Hangzhou, Nanjing and Wuhan play as sub area core nodes, the network is most complex in downstream, less in middle stream, and least in upper stream, which shows a very simple network structure.(6) The industrial division and cooperation in Yangtze River Economic Belt as a whole is in the primary stage of converting into inter-cities development from inter-corporations development. It also shows different evolution stages in upper, middle and down streams. The analyses in macro, middle and micro levels on multiple facets reveal that:the downstream area, especially the Yangtze Delta area has entered into networked based development, the main barriers and limitations of the industrial division and cooperation are being gradually dissolved; the middle stream is experiencing development proliferation of the industrial division and cooperation from the core city to the outer circle radioactively; the upper stream is in early agglomeration development stage, the industrial factors are concentrated into core cities, the radioactive effect has not been apparent.(7) The key to the path and strategy of the optimization of the industrial division and cooperation is to stick to the principle of "guided by government, operated by market, pillared by enterprises, serviced by society". Based on studies of the worldwide best practices such as the Appalachian mountain area, the Tennessee River area, the City circles of New York, London and Tokyo, and the industrial internet by General Electric, and taking specific realities into considerations, this thesis sums up to a feasible path and development strategy of the industrial division and cooperation in Yangtze River Economic Belt, that is, to continuously be guided by government, dominated by the trade market, to get industry reconstructed, to form up central cities, to help incubate and empower the leading enterprises, as well as to catalyze the development of the industrial internet and "internet+" and so forth.
