The urbanization, industrialization, agricultural modernization and the information technology have made remarkable achievement after years of development; however, the progress has also produced a series of problems. For example, a large portion of the agricultural population has moved to urban cities and towns, yet the civilization of the population has lagged – there are difficulties for the “newcomers” to be socially integrated to their new habitation. Also, compared with the pace of urbanization of population during the process, the urbanization of land seems to be overly rapid, and the utilization efficiency of the construction land is also considered to be low. Besides all the problems mentioned above, the spatial distribution, scale, and structures of current cities are not reasonable enough to match the capacity of existing environmental resources of these cities as well. Some other problems may also refer to the unmatched industrialization during urbanization progress, the inconsistency of industrial structure, employment structure, and urbanization development, the lag of agricultural modernization in compare with industrialization development, and how to implement advantages in information technologies as a late-comer, etc.Under the background mentioned above, this thesis will explore the city-industry integration during the progress of Chinese economic development based on the synchronization of “four modernizations”.Based upon the perspective of interdisciplinary, and combined with economics, industrial organization, urban economics, industrial economics, management study, statistics, and system engineering, etc., this thesis starts from the background of synchronization of the “four modernizations”, which include new industrialization, new urbanization, information technology, and agricultural modernizations, to analyze the theoretical foundation of city-industry integration, and then define “city-industry integration” under the background mentioned above. Besides, this thesis will also like to build up a theoretical economic model for the city-industry integration under the background of synchronization of “four modernizations”. Under the guidance of the theoretical model built up previously, this thesis will utilize the VAR model, which includes Granger Causality Tests, variance analysis, impulse-response function, principal component analysis, and some other research methods and tools, to analyze the influence factors, dynamic mechanism, and evaluation models of city-industry integration in the future economic development; and ultimately, this thesis would like toforecast and evaluation the development of city-industry integration, and sum up the possible problems in the process, and come up with practical solutions to these problems. The main contributions of this thesis can be concluded as following: For the first time, the thesis puts forward the new definition of city-industry integration in the macro perspective, and defines the analysis range of the city and industry of the empirical research; For the first time, the thesis constructs a economic theoretical model for city-industry integration under synchronization of four modernizations, which not only enhance the theoretical foundation for the research of city-industry integration, but also can guide the subsequent empirical analysis and research; The thesis explores two typical problems in the development of “city-industry integration” – empty cities and industry idling based upon three perspectives of population, economy, and space; Under the guidance of the new definition of the city-industry integration, the research object is expanded to the regional level from the current focus of high-tech zones or urban district in the empirical research. The main points and conclusions of this thesis are as follows:i. The thesis thinks the city-industry integration is refers to the development model which achieve the industrial structure is reasonable, the urban industrial layout optimization, the urban services facilities perfect according to the mutual promotion and mutual coordinated development of the four modernizations, truly make the industries and cities support each other, rely on each other and mutual matching, realize the four modernizations synchronous development and the city and industries interactive in the process of simultaneous development of four modernizations.ii. The thesis thinks that there are unidirectional or bidirectional Granger causality between the four modernizations in the process of the city-industry integration, and the four modernizations have a mechanism of self adjustment in their respective development, this view has been confirmed through the empirical research in chapter 3.iii. this thesis explores two typical problems in the development of “city-industry integration” – empty cities and industry idling based upon three perspectives –population, economy, and space; and therefore, concludes that empty cities and industry idling are caused by the imbalance between the industrial structure and spatial allocation in the process of urbanization and industrial development. And finally, the thesis indicates that to solve the problems, urbanization and industrialization need to be deeply integrated in terms of population, economy, and spatial allocation.iv. The thesis indicates that the level of city-industry integration across the country has been increasing steadily year by year, and classified these regions into primary, secondary, and tertiary regions of city-industry integration according to the value of city-industry integration, this view has been confirmed through the empirical research in chapter 5.v. The thesis found that there are 3 main factors affecting the development of city-industry integration in China over the past years. There are 6 main factors that affect the development of city-industry integration in different regions. According to the empirical study of the city-industry integration of the country from 1978 to2014 and the different regions across the country in 2014, the thesis draws three and six principal component factors respectively. These are the main factors affect the city-industry integration.vi. Based on theoretical and empirical analysis of “city-industry integration”, this thesis thinks we should escalate the optimization of industrial structures, promote the optimization of industrial structures and employment structures, extend the industry chain into a more diversified direction, strengthen the construction of open-development zones and industry cluster zones, accelerate the progress of new urbanization, and etc. to ultimately deepen the development of “city-industry integration”.Of course, there is a need to further study in the future in the tool selection of the empirical analysis, the improvement of index selection, the transformation of the theory analysis from the static to dynamic and so on.
