The Geography Information System (GIS) has been widely used in various fields of production and life ever since it was developed in the 1960s. In both China and foreign countries, GIS education has become an important part in cultivating persons for modern society in many universities and institutes. GIS has become an essential demand for talented persons in the 21st century. In the late 1990s, the domestic GIS specialty education, including undergraduate education, master education and doctor education has been ardently and greatly developed in the Department of Geography, Geology, Mapping and Management. GIS was brought into the curricula of senior high school in form of government documentary depending on the new reform of fundamental education in China which was started in late 2001.The content on GIS will be added to the geography course according to the documentary and it will become a must. As well the course of Geography Information Technology based on GIS will become an elective course for the senior high school. GIS education has already been a bit large in scale both in advanced education and fundamental education, but GIS specialty education has been popular only for three or four years. The curricula criterion for senior high school in China was formally issued in March in 2003 and the primary education of GIS is still in seedtime. The cultivation aim, curricula arrangement, teaching mode of GIS specialty education and fundamental education has not been formed completely yet, even the GIS education has not been understood well.After analyzing and studying a large number of references on the GIS specialty education and fundamental education, as well as making the plan for GIS education and trying out the teaching in common senior high school, the writer constructs the teaching mode for both GIS as education content and GIS as education technology, and also designs BISPGIS-Basic Instruct Software Platform.GIS is a kind of key technology in geography information science and it is a pretty new and widely used subject on the study of geography. It is based on geography and has syntheses of different subjects. GIS education is different from other subjects on basic theory and technology. Attention should be paid to the teachingfunction about modern education technology, emphasis should be put on the practice of teaching, advantage of network and distance education should be taken when constructing the teaching mode. The paper constructs some teaching modes of GIS, such as multimedia mode, network mode, solving problems mode.As information technology science, GIS not only has a great function on obtaining, processing and analyzing information but also is a kind of very practical education technology. From teaching practice to theory, the paper poses some teaching modes of GIS: the mode based on GIS straight handle, the model based on Multimedia GIS> the model based on web GIS, the model based on the secondly exploitation, the model based on dummy GIS and 3d GIS. These modes are the directions of the GIS basic teaching.On the base of teaching practice and research, also according to the item on the reform of fundamental education curricula, this paper analyses the technology ,teachers and teaching environment of GIS education, and puts forward the curricula criterion for GIS education.The key problem in GIS education is the teaching software for GIS. The paper analyses the disadvantage of the special software on GIS and the teaching software, teaching platform on GIS. It is believed that a special software for GIS teaching must be developed. So in the paper, a platform software-BISPGIS is put forward and developed on base of some concerned theories and the COMGIS technology, which achieves two functions as "true realization" and "simulate realization" and gives certain directions about developing software for GIS education.But the concrete content, teaching mode and exploitation of teaching materials for GIS education still needs to be discussed, for the GIS specialty education is still...
