Modern design, which is part of the history of culture development in 20th Centenary, has established the base for modern material culture's format and content. Among that, type design has played an essential role in promoting communication of human being. Since 20th, Chinese modern design changes quickly along with the process of social economy's open and reform; especially, appearance and development of computer technology breathe fresh vigor into modern design; in reverse, design encouraged the development of economy as well. The continuously renovation of social soft environment to domestic designing, as well as hard environment, such as, medium and carrier of designing, make it possible for various design changing. Therefore, three key factors for vision conveyance, including graphic, image and character, should change accordingly, to satisfy the functional need of modern media and social psychology with proactive attitude. However, admittedly, the level of domestic type design lags behind that development in abroad, comparing with the fact that graphic and image keep the same pace with international level.The applying realism of type of Chinese characters itself reflects the fact that there lacks enough recognition from the society and designer toward culture background of type, designing skeleton and type applying. Paying more attention to practice and content while ignoring theory and context, lead to a vision environmental chaos of Chinese character. Hence, China should establish well environment for type's development and applying system, through which we can generalize high-qualified type to satisfy the need for modern design. This relates to the issue of culture heritage, for which, it can be regarded as a social need, as well as a social responsibility.Therefore, this dissertation will research the current situation on Chinese type's design and appliance by examining the aspects from word, type, type design and textual layout, compiling with concrete empirical designing study. Through that, it tries to establish a self-contained research framework for Chinese type design, and make conclusion on methodology of Chinese type design.The first part examines the origin of word. As the base for type design, the development of Chinese character becomes the most important basis of type design. The process of Chinese type design is a way to experience Chinese culture, forasmuch; clear understanding of Chinese character will avoid wrong way on type designing, and avoid miscommunication which might lead blight toward society. Besides, deep understanding toward character will enrich the designer with a sense on word reading, scanning, and designing, and find the connection between type design and form, pronounce and meaning. On that way, it can show our respect toward character culture, in another word, type design is a way to bear the intensive spirit of culture.The second part narrates type. From broad and narrow meaning of type, definition toward type through various disciplines, this part tries to examine the concept of type, as well as the connection among itself, ancient word and modern word. Different sections of this part analyze developing history and styling changing of type, to make a better understanding of history development of type.The third part analyzes modern type design and font facture. Through research toward facture art on type copperplate and glass sheet, combining with the theories on English letter type designing and the previous research on type and font, this part tries to establish type designing method based on computer science and practical method for type developing environment.The fourth part will connect type with textual layout, through computer type and various empirical samples, to illustrate the function of word on page designing. Fine textual layout needs to be accompanied with fine appliance of fine type, and it is difficult to separate type with textual layout. Therefore, organic feedback on type designing process from betaken information and improvement on type design are analyzed with emphasis on this part.This dissertation regards that Chinese character-the main carrier of information communication, will unavoidably be affected by various carriers, on the background that singular paper media is transferring to screen-media based multi media. We should pay more attention to the development of media technology, as well as to character type design itself, on which basis we should make deeper research toward font vision and new vision development.After studying traditional type, this dissertation tries to set up a valid method and practical development vision for type design, up to scientific, human and aesthetic standard. Author wishes to do some contribution toward Chinese character type design, to improve the lag-behind study on Chinese character type design and to encourage more research on domestic type design.
