It is an important period in the history of chemistry that western chemistry made progress rapidly, which founds the base of modern chemistry. With the rapid development of western chemistry, it began to spread over China. The missionary in the late 19 century played an important role in the transmission of scientific knowledge. The translation works before 20 century were all accomplished by missionaries and Chinese scholars, but the contents in these books were fairly old compared to those of western.Journals in which western scientific knowledge have been introduced into China as a kind of media have such functions as help to understand and accumulate a certain field knowledge deeply, and they could increase the level of content effectively because of time effect and concentration. The appearance of Journal of YA Quan, which introduced the last knowledge to China, supplies a gap between the China and foreign country in chemistry and it plays an important role in the process of casting western chemistry in China and in the Chinese history of modern professional scientific journal in the late Qing Dynasty by its feature and chemical characteristic. The methods of analyzing and comparing literatures are adopt to study the theories of periodic law of elements and essence of material. The spreading way through Journal of YA Quan of such elements as argon, helium, radium, polonium discovered after 1870 is also investigated. The status of Journal of YA Quan and the chief editor DU Ya-quan are made clear when studying the process of spreading western chemistry into China. In summary, conclusions are obtained as follows. It is the first time that periodic law of elements was introduced in China by Journal of YA Quan, which stand out in inducing western chemistry into China. The important works born in the late 1850 in the field of western chemistry were reported by the journal, especially molecular theory which recovered a gap in modern Chinese history of chemistry. In a word, Journal of YA Quan is an important media in the process of spreading western chemistry into China.Journal of YA Quan is the first comprehensive natural journal edited by Chinese which mainly spreads modern western chemistry. The achievement publishing in the Journal of YA Quan is introduced into China passing by Japan, and it is more professional and scientific due to its translating form, communicating mechanism and contents. It has magnitude value in the spreading of chemical knowledge, or the formatted expressing vocabularies in journal science, or the standardized journal.Journal of YA Quan has finished the process that transits from missionary publishing or missionary-Chinese scholar publishing to Chinese scholar publishing alone. The publishing mode created by DU Ya-quan has a distinguished feature lying that it spread modern western chemistry in the form of natural scientific journal and that it adopt mathematics inherit from Journal of Pu Tong in the form of comprehensive journal. Now a day, it still has valuable and important meaning in the history of journal development. The development of journal as a media of science and technology has a close relation with the society. The embedded rules between time and science, time and journal should be grasped which reflect the level of science and cognitive ability. Some valuable works were reported exquisitely and introduced rapidly in China by Journal of YA Quan, which mainly reported chemistry in the late Qing Dynasty, and its historical meaning is quite large and Journal of YA Quan has a significant achievement in modern chemistry communication.
