Approach New Contextualism

Increasing urbanization of China has seen contradicts in the city construction, and this has led to the whole crisis of cities (environment, characteristics, culture crisis……) exhibiting as"constructive destroying"by cut historic cultural context,"one face of thousands of cities"lack of regional culture characteristics, coordination of old and new cities, short-time effect caused by political projects and visualizing projects regardless of culture context and built environment. Concerning and ponderation thus were arisen and expressed in theoretic source as the explore of newly scientific method on city planning and architectural design. The reorganization of new contextualism is the prudent ponderation in solving whole crisis of cities.The importance of new contextualism lies in the high summarization of city shapes and characteristic. It witnesses the city history, represents the current city and direct the city future, and it is also the condensation of city spirit. City culture included in the city context is gradually becoming an important method and measure to exhibit city regional characteristics and maintain the safety of national culture. Researches on city context benefit the overall understanding of the city construction deeply and extently from the perspective of theory. The academic importance and core value lies in promotion of the local and regional city culture. New contextualism is the review and summarization of the past city culture, the explore and creation of city culture under new historical conditions, it is also the direction and future of the sustainable development of city culture.Aiming at the importance of new contextualism theory in city construction, the following creative works were carried out:1. Starting from the analysis of all kinds of context phenomena, the configuration of new contextualism was summarized and explored. The meaning and definition of context was re-explained and contextual slice definition was given from the perspective of inter-discipline. Based on this new definition, the main charactertistics of new contextulism, selection of city function and core value as well as the configuration of new contextulism were fully illustrated and analyzed.2. From the perspectives of culturology, sociology, behaviourology and psychology, the city context was studied by interdisciplinary means on the contextual relation, concentrating on the key points of forming and development of city context. A paper on this has been published in Journal of Chongqing Jianzhu Unviersity (2007, 4). A trinity contextual evolution system was formed based the contextual slice theory and associated with the research results of sociology, in order to analyze the typical dynamics of context, thus to summarize the rules of context and set up the theoretic skeleton.3. The characteristics of city lie in the city culture and spirit included in city context. This study proposed to exhibit city characteristics by inheriting city context and promoting sustainable development. The inheritance of city context is closely related to the culture heritage protection. Culture heritage protection lead by city context is a creative idea and it is also the foundation of the achievement of sustainable development. Charters, pronouncements and pacts were studied in order to summarize the domestic and international experiences of city context protection, extract the soul dissolved in the context, and elevate the legal position of context.4. The sustainable development of new contextualism is not only the requirement of theoretic configuration and vivid life, but also the important measures to guarantee the city landscape and regional characteristics. Its theoretic value lies in the application. Based on this, four basic rules (scientific summarization, culture explore, vivid gene creation and regeneration promotion) and three measures (strengthen the regional culture characteristics, promote the integration of old and new city context, the context combination of new buildings) were proposed in this study to achieve sustainable development. Rules and measures were applied to solve the three problems in city construction and planning: reconstruction of old city, the coordination of old and new city area, the new region planning and new building designing. A journal paper-the pursuit of context in the integration of new and old cities, on this has been published in New Building issue 4 of 2007.Through the whole PhD study, a main stream is clear that new contextualism inherits the spirit of Beijing Charter in the rapid urbanization process. It promotes and maintains culture diversity, insists the route of regional buildings and modern regional buildings, thus to exhibit the modern regional city property with the characteristics of China. By means of inheriting and promoting city context, proposing design idea following city context, balancing ecology and culture in city construction, new contextualism thus fulfill the objectives of coordination and sustainable development of human resident environment. The position raising of new contextualism under globalization is not only the key to the contradicts in urbanization, but also the important measures to achieve harmonious city as well as sustainable development.
