The innovation has an important influence on improving the competition of products, anddesigners have to evolute and upgrade the technique to innovate the products for the continuousdevelopment of enterprises. In general, the conceptual design is the most creative step during theoverall design process; therefore it is necessary to improve the innovation during the conceptualdesign. In the present, several enterprises in China have to face the situation of being lack of thesustainable competitive abilities, which is a disadvantage to keep their own continuously develop. Tosolve this problem, several theories and methods based on the function are proposed in thisdissertation, which is applicable to technical evolution and upgrading of products.To insure the effective combination with upgrading and conceptual design, the relationshipsbetween design, conceptual design and innovation design are analyzed. Meanwhile, the concept offunction, structure and behavior are defined, based on which the whole design frame driven byfunction that combines innovation design and conceptual design is proposed, along with the keytechnologies and issues.In order to determine the evolutional orientation of the product, a method of predicting thetechnical maturity is proposed to support the technical evolution. According to the analytical resultson the patent data, the Theory of Invention Problem Solving (TRIZ) and patent computing algorithmare integrated to implement the prediction of the technical maturity. The obtained results are displayedon the evolutional radar map to present the location of the key technologies, along with the gapbetween the current location and the evolution limits, by which the weak components of the productsystem can be found easily, and the orientation of upgrading and innovation can be determinedquickly.To find out the effective methods for the technical evolution and upgrading, an improvedhierarchical clustering algorithm is put forward, which provides the support on the innovative design.Firstly the algorithm builds up a similar matrix according to the quotative relations in literatures. Thenthe algorithm carry out the procedure for clustering based on the similar matrix, which constantlymonitor the outlier numbers in different distance and automatically judge the terminative condition.The clustering results can provide several strategies that might be helpful to the upgrading andinnovation.The technical upgrading for the product is based on the decomposition and description to the function of the product system, therefore, an analytical method driven by function is proposed in thisdissertation. On the basis of the systemic grain sizes, the model of the system is built with the bondgraph theory, by which the dynamic performance of the system can be analyzed. Dynamicperformance can also help designers to reveal the characteristic and speciality of the products. Duringthe analytical process on the dynamic performance, the definitions of material, energy and signal arepresented. Then the solution strategies to analyze and decompose the function are discussed in detailby using the material, energy and signal flows. At the same time, the function hierarchical structure isobtained as a byproduct. Associating the dynamic analysis with the function hierarchical structure, theprocess of decomposition and description on products can be completed.According to the results from the technical evolution and function decomposition, the hybridmappings in structures, behaviors and functions are researched to upgrade the function of productsand achieve the improved design scheme. Behavior models which include different ports and objectsare defined to construct the structure to function mappings. Hybrid mappings are built on the behaviormodels, by establishing the behavior-function mappings and behavior-structure mappings respectively,through which the detailed information can be obtained. Based on the definition of basic function, theconcept of meta-function is proposed to describe the mutual effects and relations between basicfunctions. Therefore, the function hierarchical structure can be achieved through combining the basicfunctions with the meta-functions. Operations on basic functions in the function hierarchical structurecan help designers to obtain new conceptual design results, such as recombination, variation anddisplacement.With the needs in the enterprises, the equipments named as the frictional driven are redesignedbased on the proposed conceptual design methodology. Several new conceptual design schemes forthe frictional driven equipments are achieved by the analysis on the technical evolution and thedecomposition on the function of system. Among them, some obtained results have been applied forthe invention patent. The optimal solutions and good results have verified the validity andpracticability of the proposed theory.
