Spectrometer is a kind of important instrument to analyze spectrum. Traditional spectrometers were big, expensive and not portable. As the development of electrical science, computer science and MEMS, portable spectrometer is realized and developed. In this paper, the main works focus on the portable broadband spectrometer design and achievement. The proper detector and optical structure was chosen to make the wavelength is from UV to near infrared, and have good resolution. Then the applications of spectrometer are discussed:basic applications and extended applications. These applications provide some new ideas for spectrometer uses to develop more applications.During the spectrometer design and achievement, UV sensitive CCD was chosen as the system detector and the relevant circuit design like power source design, time series design were completed. Symmetrical structure was used in optical design. Good resolution can be obtained including edge wavelength and center wavelength using this structure. Front collector cylinder lens was designed to increase the system efficiency, and the filter was also designed to eliminate the second order wavelength. At last the software was developed. It can not only provide basic spectrum measurement and applications functions but also provide various user interface for software re-development.In spectrometer basic applications, film thickness measurement using spectrometer was developed. After analyzing other film thickness measurement systems, the hardware and software structure of spectrometer film thickness measurement system was proposed. The achievement was divided into three parts:hardware, algorithm and software. In this procedure, sensitivity separation method was proposed to increase the multilayer film thickness measurement efficiency. And we also proposed a back reflectance compensation method to increase the accuracy of the transparent substrate film measurement.In extended applications, the slit and single dispersion were changed into coded aperture and double dispersion. According to different coded aperture, different decoded algorithms were used. The one-dimensional spectrum and spectral image (snapshot image spectrometer) compression were realized. A coding method using prior knowledge was used to increase the fidelity but not sacrificing the compression ratio.
