The dissertation reviews western landscape history from the perspective of Landscape Planning. Based on the research, the dissertation probes the historical evolution of western landscape planning from early eighteenth century to mid-nineteenth century. The core argument From Landscape Garden to Garden City shows the train of thought in this research, and aims to explain the developing trend and relationship of the conceptions.The main content of this research can be devided into three major parts:the analysis of the landscape planning history, summary of developing process, and continuation and influences of landscape planning.Firstly, through massive literature and field work, combine with the most influential and representative events, thoughts and characters selected, the paper analyzes the development of western landscape planning from early eighteenth century to mid-nineteenth century. According to the development tendency, the history is divided into four phases:the rural landscape planning (from early eighteenth century to late eighteenth century), regional landscape planning (from mid-eighteenth century to mid-nineteenth century), urban landscape planning (from mid-eighteenth century to mid-nineteenth century), and paradiam establishment of landscape planning(mid-nineteenth century).Secondly, it researches on the developing process of landscape planning. By relating to developing context including philosophical thoughts, literature and art, society and politics, industry and economy, the dissertation analyzes the impelling force of landscape planning development. The paper also makes horizontal comparison of different developing phases to summarize the continuities, heritage and development of landscape planning.Thirdly, the dissertation makes an analogy to the history of landscape planning and modern theories, to elaborate the continuation and influences of landscape planning.Conclusions were drawn as follows:Firstly, the dissertation probed the historical evolution of landscape planning and concluded that the rural landscape planning affected the regional landscape planning and urban landscape planning. The three phases worked together and affected the paradiam establishment of landscape planning. Secondly, it elaborated that in the history of landscape planning, some ideas including the picturesque rural ideal, showing of regional features, economical and social improvement were continued and inherited. And the developing trends were from single isolated individual to contacting system, from art pursuit to composite function, from nobleman service to public-oriented.Lastly, it concluded that Garden City theory and its developments as well as many modern theories are a continuation of landscape planning from early eighteenth century to mid-nineteenth century. Many ideas have been explored in the history of landscape planning.
