Objective To explore the clinical effectiveness and part therapeutic mechanism of therapy of Xin Zhi Liu An decoction, a traditional Chinese empirical prescription for treatment of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in acute stage.Method 60 cases of patients with COPD in acute stage were divided randomly into treatment group and control group. The cases in treatment group were treated with Xin Zhi Liu An decoction, assisted with Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Injection, Aminophylline and Bromhexine. The cases in control group were treated with western medicine simply. Symptom and signs were measured and recorded every day and the related items were measured before and after treatment.Result The clinical controlled and remarkably effective rate in treatment group (70%) is higher (P<0. 05=than that in control group. Clinical symptom and signs such as asthma, expectoration, chest distress, moist rale and rhonchin were improved greatly than those in control group. Furthermore, red tongue and yellow and greasy tongue coating were improved, compared with that in controls significantly. White blood cell (WBC), C reactive protein (CRP), Interleulin-8 (IL-8), Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a ) in treatment group were reduced significantly. The whole blood viscosity and blood plasma viscosity were obviously reduced. FEV1, FEV1%, FEV1/FVC, F50 and F25 were increased obviously. Conclusion Xin Zhi Liu An decoction had good effect on COPD. The clinical observation suggested that it may reduce inflammation of respiratory tract by inhibiting the inflammation medium and cell factor release. It also could improved property of hemorhology and lung function.
