Obesity causes the five "D"s: Disfigurement, Discomfort, Disability, Disease, and Death. Additionally, prolonged obesity can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis, and diabetes, which are typically considered adult onset conditions or diseases. In 1996, at the European Obesity Conference in Barcelona, Spain, world health experts pronounced obesity a disease that required active and immediate treatment. Furthermore, the World Health Organization assembled a research team that defined obesity and established treatment guidelines.In Oriental medicine, obesity as an illness was first mentioned in an ancient document, 《 Huang-di-nei-jing 》. Over the centuries numerous documents discussing the causes, symptoms and treatments of obesity have been printed. In recent years, scientific publications concerning the treatment of obesity and possible remedies and medications have increased significantly. The increased interest in obesity research may reflect social trends that have placed a greater emphasis on health and beauty than in the past. However, treatment for obesity has met with limited success despite increased research effort.This paper describes the results of treating obesity with low-frequency electric acupuncture and the subsequent effect of the acupuncture on various body elements, as well as lipid content of blood and body figure.1. Experimental model selectionThirty-five obesity patients were randomly selected for the experimental group and thirty-three patients were randomly selected for the control group. Each participant was selected from patients who were treated at Beautiful Korean Medical Clinic for 4 weeks between February 2003 and March 2005. All patients had more than 25% body fat.
