Objective: To study the mechanisms and effect of treatment of tonifying kidney, clearing (heat) and draining (damp), activating blood on primary chronic glomerulonephritis (PCGN).Methods: Theory study and clinical investigation were involed in this study. Selecting and analyzing morden articles were the main methods of theory study. In clinical investigation, professor Sun's experience on the treatment of PCGN was summarized first. Then 35 CRF patients who were treated by tonifying kidney, clearing and draining, activating blood were involved. Their changes of urinary and blood lab datas were recorded and analyzed. Results: Kidney insufficiency, damp (heat) and blood stasis were the main mechanisms of PCGN. Kidney insufficiency was the base of occurrence. Damp (heat) and blood stasis were the key mechanisms of progression. So tonifying kidney, clearing (heat) and draining (damp), activating blood were the main methods of treatment on PCGN. The efficiencies of CRF were 75% vs 66.7%. There was no significant change between the treatment and control group. Patients' symptom scores were reduced significantly compared with initial level (P=0.00) in treatment group, but no in the control group. Proteinuria and serum creatinine were decreased significantly compared with initial level(P<0.05). But there were no significant changes in the control (P>0.05).Conclusion: Treatment of tonifying kidney, clearing (heat) and draining (damp), activating blood could relieve the discomfortable symptoms, improve quality of life, reduce proteinuria, slow the progression of renal damage.
