Integrative Informatics Approach

Under the background of modern science and culture, traditional Chinese medicine faces crisis. To take the way of integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine is the best choice for protecting traditional Chinese medicine. According to analysis in the Outline of Planning on Innovative Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine (2006-2020), along with the economic development, social advancement, and continuously improved standard of people's life, people have changed their health concept and life style. The change in human's disease spectrum and the advent of aging society have made it impossible for existing disease prevention and treatment modes and measures to meet the increasingly increased social demand. The trend toward combination of oriental and Western medical sciences has been seen. Moreover, science and technology are returning from separation to integration. Especially in the field of life sciences, multiple subjects are penetrating into each other. It has been a hot spot to create new theories, new technologies, and new methods to understand the life and illness phenomena. In such situation, there are two opportunities for the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine: the first is that the change of medical science mode offers favorable conditions for traditional Chinese medicine to fully exert its role. The establishment of medical science mode of "biology - society- psychology -environment" has changed the issue in Western biomedical mode that only pays attention to "diseases" and ignores "persons". Disease prevention and control strategies "moving forward" and highlights "moving downward" have created opportunities for traditional Chinese medicine to prevent, control and recuperate diseases and sub-healthy state with overall and differentiating views and individualized thoughts, improve the existence quality while prolonging the life. The second one is that the development of modern science and technology offers powerful support for the innovation of traditional Chinese medicine. Along with the rapid development of science and technology, new theories, new technologies, and new methods appear continuously. In the 21st century, the world science and technology with life science, biological science, information science, electronic science, materials science, sophisticated science, and systematic science as the front edge develop rapidly. Natural science and human studies penetrate and bind mutually. Emerging subjects appear continuously. Further increased knowledge, numerous database, analyzing tools and technologies offer new methods and possibilities for demonstrating and clarifying the scientific connotation and resolving key problems of traditional Chinese medicine theories.After reviewing and examining the evolution course of integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, the article tries to probe into possible channels for the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine with the method of information science, summarize the gains and losses by using the building and use of traditional Chinese and Western medicine for encephalopathy database of Brainbank (International Nerve Informatics Network China Node) as an example, discuss the realistic significance of information science method in the course of integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine as well as the role of database technology in promoting the development of study in traditional Chinese and Western medicine for encephalopathy.
