Recently, mental diseases are severely threatening the health of human beings with a noticeable increase in its incidence. Now, many researchers have devoted themselves to discover some more effective methods for curing such diseases. During that period, the integration of Traditional Chinese and Western medicine is drawing more and more attentions as a quite promising method. And there are more and more studies carried out as well. However, few results of the studies are applied by the therapeutists, for they know few about it. Thus the development of the study on the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, in some way, is restricted by such a condition. Now, the current urgency is to provide more powerful theories with its great value and profound significances to encourage its application. This thesis, is a relatively systematic research on the development of the integration of Traditional Chinese and Western medicine over last sixty years or so. The whole course can be divided in to six stages as following: the first, the seedtime stage from 1949 to 1954; the second, the underway development stage from 1955 to 1959;the third, an elementary development stage from 1960 to 1965;the forth, a special development stage from 1966 to 1977;the fifth, resuming development stage; the last, the rapid development stage in the new century. Each stage will be given concrete analyses in order to make out how the research on the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine developed and what its value and significances are through neatening its long history. And through the retrospect on the development of the research of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, its necessity has been shown distinctively. Many integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicines with high curative effects are authentically discovered and proved worthy being applied. And the studies have supplemented the correlative theories with the new develop of pathogenesis, differentiation of symptoms and therapeutic systems. It is necessary to carry out further research of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine for the progression in curing the patients who suffer the mental diseases. However, it is just a great attempt without groundbreaking discovery, and the study requires enforcement and the approaches need improvement. It is a greet task to enhance the development of the research of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. Anyhow, with the help of the modern highly developed technology, we can gradually advance the study on the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, to enrich the psychiatric theories and make more contributions to improving the curative effects of such medicines in practice.
